SubsWhen
A long, long, really super long time ago, the plug got\Npulled right out from under the world we live in.
It was a long, long time ago.
With nothing holding it in anymore,\Nthe whole ocean just drained away.
A hole opened up under our world one day.
All it left behind was a dry, barren landscape.
And it drained the oceans.
It forced us to live quiet, meager lives.\NBut we still manage to get by in our own ways.
We were left with only barren land.
Then, some other day forever and ever ago, but maybe\Nnot really all that long ago, a
hole opened up in the sky.
There was nothing we could do but to accept it.
And in through that hole came what we call "airplanes."
We lived on with what we had.
They belonged to the Yufang people\Nwho lived on the other side.
And then, the day came.
The Yufang came in great numbers,\Nand they hired people here
to work for them.
It was a long, long ago, but not that long.
The
y
brought
their
aircraft and
a bit\Nof economic rejuvenation into
our lives.
A
hole opened up in the sky.
Until one day when, out of the blue,\N
the Yufang
quickly began packing up to leave.
After that, those things known as "aircraft" came through.
It
was a
hectic event as
they
scrambled to take off,
Those aircraft belonged to the people from Yufang on the other side of the hole.
abandoning so much
of
what\Nthey had brought with them.
Since then, many more of their people came across.
Soon after, t
he hole closed
up and\Nwe were left cut off from
the Yufang
world
.
They hired us
to work for them.
Some
people say
they
rushed to get home\N
because the
y saw the hole shrinking
.
The
Yufang
brought
us
aircraft and
revitalized
our lives.
Others
think
they
had to head back because\Nthey were losing some
war on the other side
.
However,
the Yufang
suddenly hurried back one day.
But no one really
kn
ows
for sure.
There
was a
panic, and
they
left many
of
their stuff behind.
Once they were gone, all sorts of crooks and heroes,
T
he hole closed
soon after.
con-artists and plain ol' jerks stirred up\Na frenzy to claim what was left behind.
And our contact with
the Yufang
ended
.
People lost sight of who was friend or foe.\NWho was right and who was wrong.
Some
said
they
went back
because the
hole was about to close up
.
Until someone, caught in a real pickle,\Nbet it all on one all-out hit.
Others
said
they
were about to lose a
war on the other side
of the hole.
The battle swallowed up the whole world,
No one
kn
ew
for sure.
going down as the biggest in all history,\Nlater dubbed the "Linouchi Air War."
After the Yufang left, there was a fight\Nto seize what they had left behind.
The end of that battle brought peace to the world\Nat last and we all lived happily ever after.
The bad, the good, the scammers, the scumbags,\Neveryone was fighting to have a share of it.
Just kidding, the squabbling never ended and\Nthere are as many sky pirates today as ever.
Who was hostile? Who was friendly?\NWho was in the right? It was a complete mess.
The world
is wild, ruthless, and unjust.
Some who were caught in the mess wished to turn the tide and took a gamble.
But while I wouldn't say I love it,\Nwe still manage to get by in our own ways.
This battle plunged the whole world into an unprecedented war.
That'
s the world we live in.
It was later known as the "Rinouchi War".
Ijitsu
.
After that, the disputes subsided.
You sure
do know the absolute\Nworst way to enjoy a beer.
And peace returned once again.
I've waited tables, danced stages,\Npeddled goods on the street,
Congratulations. Congratulations.
but there's really nothing out there I feel a calling for.
If only that was the case.
It's funny.
Minor disputes continued. And air pirates were just as abundant.
Here
I am, struggling to be who I imagine myself to be,\Nwhile you could be anything yet choose nothing.
The world
became barbaric, without empathy or reason.
Well then.
Although people were upset, their lives continued that way.
Why don't you take my hand\Nand show me where I be
long?
This i
s the world we live in.
An anti-
air pirate
force
?
"

.
There's
a place in my home town\Ncalled the
Ouni Company
.
You sure
know the worst way of drinking it.
They
contacted me
looking for fighter pilots
.
Waitress, dancer, hawker, I've tried everything.
Sounds like quite the opportunity.\NLet's take them up on it
, Reona.
But there's nothing I want to do.
I'm sure it pays better than flying around\Nas a couple of transporters.
Unbelievable.
Without a doubt. But it's not something\Njust the two of us can pull off.
Here
, right before someone who can't reached their dream...
I see... It will certainly be lonely with you gone.
There's someone who can do anything, but without any passion.
I'm
truly
sorry, Tamil
, but I simply
must
put myself\Nto
work
to
help
my family
eke out a living.
Then...
Promise you'll call for
me if you
are\Never in need. I truly mean it
, Emma.
Can you take my hand, and bring me a
long?
I will.
Thank you.
Defending against
air pirate
s
?
If you're building yourself an air
squadron,
\N
I'd recommend
taking
my sister
in my place
.
There's
this
Ouni Company
from where I live
.
I
'd rather
focus on my
research.
They
were
looking for fighter pilots
, and asked me to join.
Is she e
xperience
d? Not at all, b
ut Kate will
out-perform\Nme before you know it. That
I
can guarantee
.
That sounds great.
All right,
it's settled, then
.
Let's take the job
, Reona.
Experience
d at
what?
We'd get better pay than doing simple delivery runs.
Piloting
a fighter plane.
That's true.
Getting to know something you're unfamiliar\Nwith will be good for you.
But it won't be enough with just the two of us.
Very well, then.
Is that so? It'll be lonely with you leaving.
The hell's that? That bird's lookin'
to crash.
I'm
sorry, Tamil
.
Maybe not.
I
must
work
in order
to
feed
my family
.
Well color me surprised.
Contact
me if you
need anything.
Not everyone can pull that off flying against Reona.
I'll always be there for you
, Emma.
Out n
orthwest?
Thank you.
Yes
, I'm looking to increase
our
air
routes next month.
Reona, about joining the
squadron,
I'd recommend
my sister
.
That
quadrant
is
full of
pirates.
I
wanna
focus on my
studies.
If your team were only a tad larger, I'd be willing\Nto take you on as our official flight corps.
E
xperience
?
It does sound like a bit much for just the four of us.
None whatsoever. B
ut Kate will
become a much better pilot than
I
am. You have my word
.
That air pirate...
All right,
please take care of her
.
They're as good as done for\Nyet they simply refuse to give.
Experience
with
what?
Leave 'em be. They're out of ammo\Nand shot up real good.
With controlling
a fighter plane.
They'll break off eventually.
Learning more about what you don't know will help you grow, Kate.
Really, now?! Takes guts to fly straight\Nto your death like that!
Okay.
Alright boys, time to crank an inertia handle up\Nthat pirate's butt and roast 'em like a shish kebab!
What is she doing? She's about
to crash.
Wait for it.
That's amazing.
Reona's up against a talented pilot. An outstanding one, to say the least.
The N
orthwest?
Yes
.
I plan on expanding
our
delivery
routes next month.
That
air space
is
filled with air
pirates.
If we have more pilots, then I could hire you girls as a proper squadron.
Indeed, our numbers still leave much to be desired.
We've got a pirate following.
I thought we've taken it out. How is it still flying?
Ignore it. It's out of ammo and trailing smoke.
We'll shake it off.
You've gotta be kidding!
You've got guts coming in here! Men, crank your inertia handle up their butt, and we'll roast it!
Roger!
As you wish!

Just full o' surprises ain't she?
Well, my, my...
I like the way you fly, so I'm gonna let you work with me!
You're good. I'll let you be my companions!
You what?
Taking me head on with just four planes, you've got quite the
guts!
The way you flew into battle with\Njust four planes like that takes
guts!
Do you even know what small fries means?
Where did you even learn a word like "riffraff?"
Of course I do! I learned it all from See the Sea!
I'm not stupid, okay! I learned about it in "See the Sea"\Nand it means all sorts of unimportant people and stuff!
It means all those who are simply irrelevant!
Sheesh, in weather like this?
Hey, that's quite dangerous.

Don't you ever grow tired of them?
You sure don't get sick of them, huh?
Long time no see, Emma.\NHow long you been back in

It's been a long time, Emma.

And how could you?\NYou'd have to be cooperative to fly in a squad.
I'm fine all by myself.
Seems like just what you lack.
I don't plan on teaming up with others.
Who's
short-stuff over there

As expected. After all, cooperation is required in a squadron.

I know you are, but what am I?
I’ve had it.
Super short!
That's enough!
Shut up you idiot!

I'll admit that landing you made earlier was impressive.
I can do that, too.
Yeah?!
Lies! You're lying!
I mean, anyone coulda done that.
Rather than flying solo, it'd be more fun flying together.
I definitely could.
You'
d become stronger.
Yeah, nope! Don't believe that!
Give
it a try
.
Flying as part of a team is even more fun than flying solo.
After all, we

You'

That'd be the easiest, most effective,\Nand absolutely perfect way to handle this.

HIDI A long, long, really super long time ago, the plug got\Npulled right out from under the world we live in. With nothing holding it in anymore,\Nthe whole ocean just drained away. All it left behind was a dry, barren landscape. It forced us to live quiet, meager lives.\NBut we still manage to get by in our own ways. Then, some other day forever and ever ago, but maybe\Nnot really all that long ago, a hole opened up in the sky. And in through that hole came what we call "airplanes." They belonged to the Yufang people\Nwho lived on the other side. The Yufang came in great numbers,\Nand they hired people here to work for them. They brought their aircraft and a bit\Nof economic rejuvenation into our lives. Until one day when, out of the blue,\Nthe Yufang quickly began packing up to leave. It was a hectic event as they scrambled to take off, abandoning so much of what\Nthey had brought with them. Soon after, the hole closed up and\Nwe were left cut off from the Yufang world. Some people say they rushed to get home\Nbecause they saw the hole shrinking. Others think they had to head back because\Nthey were losing some war on the other side. But no one really knows for sure. Once they were gone, all sorts of crooks and heroes, con-artists and plain ol' jerks stirred up\Na frenzy to claim what was left behind. People lost sight of who was friend or foe.\NWho was right and who was wrong. Until someone, caught in a real pickle,\Nbet it all on one all-out hit. The battle swallowed up the whole world, going down as the biggest in all history,\Nlater dubbed the "Linouchi Air War." The end of that battle brought peace to the world\Nat last and we all lived happily ever after. Just kidding, the squabbling never ended and\Nthere are as many sky pirates today as ever. The world is wild, ruthless, and unjust. But while I wouldn't say I love it,\Nwe still manage to get by in our own ways. That's the world we live in. Ijitsu. You sure do know the absolute\Nworst way to enjoy a beer. I've waited tables, danced stages,\Npeddled goods on the street, but there's really nothing out there I feel a calling for. It's funny. Here I am, struggling to be who I imagine myself to be,\Nwhile you could be anything yet choose nothing. Well then. Why don't you take my hand\Nand show me where I belong? An anti-air pirate force? There's a place in my home town\Ncalled the Ouni Company. They contacted me looking for fighter pilots. Sounds like quite the opportunity.\NLet's take them up on it, Reona. I'm sure it pays better than flying around\Nas a couple of transporters. Without a doubt. But it's not something\Njust the two of us can pull off. I see... It will certainly be lonely with you gone. I'm truly sorry, Tamil, but I simply must put myself\Nto work to help my family eke out a living. Promise you'll call for me if you are\Never in need. I truly mean it, Emma. I will. Thank you. If you're building yourself an air squadron,\NI'd recommend taking my sister in my place. I'd rather focus on my research. Is she experienced? Not at all, but Kate will out-perform\Nme before you know it. That I can guarantee. All right, it's settled, then. Experienced at what? Piloting a fighter plane. Getting to know something you're unfamiliar\Nwith will be good for you. Very well, then. The hell's that? That bird's lookin' to crash. Maybe not. Well color me surprised. Not everyone can pull that off flying against Reona. Out northwest? Yes, I'm looking to increase our air routes next month. That quadrant is full of pirates. If your team were only a tad larger, I'd be willing\Nto take you on as our official flight corps. It does sound like a bit much for just the four of us. That air pirate... They're as good as done for\Nyet they simply refuse to give. Leave 'em be. They're out of ammo\Nand shot up real good. They'll break off eventually. Really, now?! Takes guts to fly straight\Nto your death like that! Alright boys, time to crank an inertia handle up\Nthat pirate's butt and roast 'em like a shish kebab! As you wish! Roger! Wuzzat? A kid? I'm no kid! You buncha riffraffs\Nbetter call me Miss Chika! Just full o' surprises ain't she? I like the way you fly, so I'm gonna let you work with me! You what? The way you flew into battle with\Njust four planes like that takes guts! Where did you even learn a word like "riffraff?" I'm not stupid, okay! I learned about it in "See the Sea"\Nand it means all sorts of unimportant people and stuff! Sheesh, in weather like this? Is that...? Someone you know? I imagine that's my cherry blossom thief. Meaning...? This is so good! Nothing beats a good pancake! Goodness, Kylie, you're eating those again? Don't you ever grow tired of them? Long time no see, Emma.\NHow long you been back in Rahama? And... who the heck are they? I'm here with a business proposal for you today. I'll pass. Have you spared even a thought for your own future? Future? What's that? Sounds awful. I'm good on my own. Not looking for a team. And how could you?\NYou'd have to be cooperative to fly in a squad. Seems like just what you lack. Who's short-stuff over there? If you're looking to live easy all on your own,\NI'd suggest you watch your mouth. Unless you're looking for an unnecessary fight. And who even asked you, shorty? I think it's time for you to\Ngo home to your picture books. Is that the only insult you know, dimwit?\NI told you to watch your mouth. You're the one who better bite\Nthat tongue, you stupid shorty! ...shorty-head! You got any brains in there? Didn't anyone ever tell you only idiots\Ngo around calling people names? My, my, they've certainly got spunk. Well you're still just a dumb little idiotic tiny short idiot! You're telling me. I know you are, but what am I? Super short! Shut up you idiot! Enough! Your little tantrum cost this place\N963 pounds and 21 sen. That's about 480 each, even if you split it two ways. It was her fault. How can you even say that?! You like planes, don't you? Not particularly. How about flying? I enjoy it. And losing? I hate it! I'll admit that landing you made earlier was impressive. Yeah?! I mean, anyone coulda done that. I definitely could. Yeah, nope! Don't believe that! Flying as part of a team is even more fun than flying solo. You'll get even better, too. Why not give it a try? We're just a ragtag group of misfits, anyway. Kylie, I do expect you to pay me back\Nfor that cherry blossom, you know. This alarm is an automatic alert set off\Nby readings on our radar. Radar shows movement bearing 340 degrees,\Non our two o'clock. We're picking up no large aircraft in that direction,\Nbut we have unidentified bogey moving in fast. Altitude is 600 khrill. Cloud base sits at 450 khrill. Winds are blowing in from 280 degrees. Wind speed is 4.5 khrill. We are currently positioned\Nat A-E 145 degrees and 54 minutes. M-B 30 degrees and 17 minutes. What are our fuel reserves? 4,107 bottles. We can maintain course at current\Nspeeds for 695 kilometers. Which means we have no chance of evading them. Really? Do we have no escape routes? Tell me Maria, can you resist buying new shoes? Not a chance. Same goes for me and bags. That's how big of a chance we have here. Things are looking grim, then. First Officer. Requesting permission to launch fighters. We're really doing this? We're running out of time. So be it! Permission to launch all fighters! Oh, and uhh... All crew to their battle positions! Anyone who can't keep up is gonna get\Nan inertia handle cranked right up their butts! Roger! I thought we'd at least get off this time around. Well aren't you nauseatingly naïve? The Nazarin are good to go already? That's what I like about these freelancers! Today's cargo is of particular importance. You are aware of this, yes? Yes ma'am! Let my lovely little birdies know\Nthere's a bonus to be had today. For each and every plane they shoot down. For me, too?! Lose even a single drop of that cargo and you're done. Get her started! Fire 'er up! All right. Same as always, two to a team- No wait, today we're in two teams of two and three. I finally feel awake. Zara, don't you go falling asleep on me out here. I'll be fine. I could pilot this thing in my sleep. Don't push your luck. Yeah yeah. Kate, Emma, Kylie. The rear's all yours. As you wish. Roger that. Bogeys sighted, two o'clock. Oh, this'll be fun! Fly high, KOTOBUKI Flight Corps! Yes ma'am! I can't shake 'em! Rodriguez! Adolfo, behind you! Something's up. These aren't the regular\Nsort of pirates we're used to! The Hagoromo's in trouble! These horrid pirates! Is that one of ours? One of theirs?! It's an enemy craft. We aren't going to make it! Kylie, nice work! Enemy in retreat. No need for pursuit. All birds return to nest. Well, it's hard to imagine anything worse\Nthan being struck by calamity. But we were fortunate enough to get\Nall the fires put out without a hitch. There wasn't even a single casualty. All thanks to the firefighters and\Nour vigilante force. How splendid! This is 12.7mm ammunition. A repacked junk shell. The sort that air pirates tend to use. Air pirates?! Oh no, they weren't pirates. They called themselves "Elite Industries." What a ridiculous name. They still attacked you, did they not? Aren't you guys supposed to be vigilantes? You just let them pummel you\Nwithout even fighting back? All of us bravely fought as best we could! But our valiant efforts were for naught\Nand we exhausted all our options! So you lost, then. Tell us everything that happened. The name's Torihei, and I'm the president\Nand CEO of Elite Industries. Truth is, we're here with a once in a lifetime sort\Nof business proposal to share with you all today! What sort of proposal? Well you see, I've heard word this town of yours\Nhas one fine fighter plane tucked away. Wow, so that's a Raiden? 1800 horsepower. 50 kilometers per hour faster\Nthan the Hayabusa. Sporting four 20mm cannons. But that all makes it so sluggish.\NI can't say I care for them. This has been passed down as\Nthe mayor's personal craft, hasn't it? What?! You can fly? I used to be a pilot, you know! Back in the day people used to call me\Nthe prince of the Rahama skies- Yeah yeah, maybe once upon a time you were. What about those pirates, though? They'll be back in three days, right? Count me in! Wait, are you serious? Well it's not like these guys can handle it! They'd be easy pickings for those pirates! Doesn't that thought just drive you mad? Sure it does. But if they can't fight back themselves,\Nhow would handing over one fighter hurt? It's not like you use it anyway, right? That's not a bad idea, huh! Sir, you can't be serious! I mean, it's a valuable fighter for sure,\Nbut it's still just one plane, right? If we try fighting, who knows\Nwhat will happen to the town? You get a big nope from me! Why? What's the big deal? I agree with Kylie. A single craft is\Nnot worth risking the entire town. Don't go getting ahead of yourselves, girlies. We work for the Ouni Company now. The madame is the only one\Nwho gets to make these decisions. If you want to use the KOTOBUKI Flight Corps to defend\Nthe town, I must ask that you speak to me, first. And the young ladies here will require\Ncontracts and compensation, of course. Stick to the plan. Me and Zara, Chika and Kate will pick them off up here. Kylie and Emma, you two work\Nwith everyone on the ground! Roger that! All right! What's the deal with these guys? Perhaps it's the KOTOBUKI Flight Corps? Hmph, maybe this'll be a good fight, then! Take 'em out! Emma, it's time to do this! I need no reminder! There they go! They're yours! Very well, then! Fire! Nice! It worked! We aren't finished yet. How dare you treat my lovely staff this way! Emma! A rear gunner?! Emma! Not on my watch! The Raiden?! Don't you underestimate the prince of the Rahama skies! Pleasure doing business with ya! All right, fall back! Aye aye, sir! The contracts you signed with the town included\Na clause about protecting the Raiden. You do understand what this means, yes? Of course. Good. Now go on out there and get that fighter back! Fly forth, KOTOBUKI Flight Corps! Tomorrow is the day we have waited for! Now one pancake! Two pancakes!\NThree and four and five pancakes! Yes we, we are the KOTOBUKI- Enough of your tone-deaf nonsense already! Nothing can stop a good song once it starts! Plus, squeezing you aboard has already thrown my fuel\Nefficiency into a nosedive. Don't make it worse by complaining! A nosedive? I don't weigh that much, you know! You weigh how many pounds, again? It's not by choice. Unlike you I merely have a more full figure, is all. Don't forget, this is all because\Nyou went and got yourself shot down! Our wings are rays of light! Stop-! Kylie! Settle down, Kylie! One of my flaps was feeling a little stuck\Nso I'm just trying to shake it loose! That's not fair, Kylie! Reona, my right flap feels off, too! And my rudder seems rather tight. What's your problem, cargo-gal? Well... Will it still be a ways to the Rohta Airfield? Huh, I dunno. Why? N-no reason. Just... Well pardon me girls, but Emma\Nhere needs to visit the ladies room! Can she hold it just a bit longer? We should make it in another ten minutes or so. I think she's good! Rohta is a great big place. A really lovely airfield. You sure know a lot about it. Have you been out to Rohta before? Way back when the Corps was just me and Reona. It was always so lively. And always stocked up with plenty of vending machines. Any with curry udon?! There should be. And burgers? You bet. What about pancakes? But of course! Yippee! Curry udon! No! No... How could this be? I wondered what you might be screaming about. This is unforgivable! Unforgivable! First they shoot up Rahama, and now my pancakes?! These were two different groups, though. Plus, I figured we could all eat together here... So I went ahead and packed enough for everyone. This is so good! The best! True bliss. We were supposed to be performing\Nfor a company dinner! You never said it was for a company of air pirates! Please! I'll pay you extra for it and everything,\Ncome on, I'm begging you! No! Absolutely not! Ack, what am I gonna do? These are air pirates we're dealing with,\NI can't just go back on our deal now... We can't put on a performance with numbers like these! There you are! We're here! We're here to assault the base, stir up commotion,\Nand make it easier for Zara to work from the inside. Getting as close as we can without being spotted is key. This all rests on how well we can\Nwork our way through this valley. Roger! Let me just fix up my makeup. C'mon! Here goes! W-we're under attack! I've got the right side! I'll take left. Boss, it's the KOTOBUKI Flight Corps! Dangit! Time to send 'em home crying! Suit up! Where are you, Zara? Well that won't do. You little...! My apologies, sir. But due to personal circumstances I am resigning from\Nmy position at this miserable company as of today. What?! Do you think this is a joke?! Was that friendly fire?! They're friends no more. Zara! Sorry I'm late. What's the situation? It's a mess! Whose side are we supposed to take? Wha?! The Raiden?! Well there goes everything. I'll get an earful for this, but so be it. We failed to obtain the Raiden. All craft, we're pulling out! Well, now. This won't do. Stick to the course, we'll hold them off. We'll meet at the rendezvous point! Watch out for that rear gun! I will! We got what we came here for. Let him go, Zara. Sure. Welcome back. Glad I made it. I wish we could just do runs between\NRahama and Areshima forever! Or even just move to Areshima for good! It's quite an orderly, well regulated place. It's beauty is in its righteousness. Is it, now? Tell me though, Chika. Surely you don't plan on keeping\Nthat in our quarters, yes? Absolutely not. If only because it is unreasonably bulky. What? But it's so fluffy! Look at this fluff! It's an anomalocaris. In ancient times, it thrived in the oceans,\Nvast expanses of water rich in salt and other minerals. Cool! Oceans, huh? How could you not know that? Well, oceans haven't existed for a long time now, after all. Chika's subconscious might have driven her to seek\Nsomething ocean related without her realizing it. Bingo! Kate, you sure know your stuff! And just how much did that cost you? 498 pounds and 98 sen! Wha...?! Oh let her be. We all use our earnings in different ways. Be it to buy stuffed animals, to drown in\Nsome good drink, or simply stuff our faces. And speaking of that, where's Kylie? Delish! A flavor unlike the pancakes of\Neither Rahama or the Hagoromo! Heya dimwit! I'm certain I told you all of us needed to submit flying\Napplications to the Areshima airway authorities. We never used to have to. That's so totalitarian. Like it or not, the law is the law and you cannot just\Ngo ignoring it and doing whatever you want. I had a feeling it wouldn't fly. But once I saw the word "pancakes" I just lost control! I'm sure you know how it can be, right? I do not. You ever get so caught up in something\Nthat you lose sight of everything else? I do not. Or just set off headstrong down the wrong path? No! No... Reona would never ever get caught up in something\Nand rush on ahead without thinking, now would she? Would you?! No! At any rate, you need to let someone know\Nbefore you go running off like that. Yeah, yeah! What a lame excuse for a fighter pilot! What's the deal with that hideous doll? It's an anomalocaris! The subconscious of all ocean life! Sounds like gibberish. Woosh! Smash! One down! What's your deal, you doofus?! Hey! Stop it! Get back here! Stop! Oh my, a passenger vehicle? A modified Tudor Model AA. To think we'd see a non-cargo automobile.\NAreshima sure is full of surprises. Oh my goodness! Are you all right? Are you hurt? How are you feeling? Uhh... Oh thank goodness you're okay. I'm so relieved, and super sorry! Think of this as an apology. That's chump change! But I'll take it! Woah! How did you do that?! A little giftey for you! Sir, we must be going. Yeah yeah, just a minute. From now on, make sure you look\Nright, left, down, and right again! Got it? Okay! Thank you! Wonderful! You have my gratitude! And that anomalocaris! I'm a fan. Don't run off like that! Don't shout like that! Quit causing such a ruckus! Quit causing trouble for the rest of us! Can't you just be quiet for a change- Somebody! Do something about this bird! That "bird" is Captain Dodo. I don't care! My goodness, just where were you\NKotoboofy Fright Snore girls off wandering? What can we do for you, Councilor Julia? Take a seat. You're making it look like I'm just picking on you. Two days from now I have\Na god-awful sort of meeting here. You can get the details from my chief of security. What sort of "meeting" might this be? And who is it with? I cannot simply promise our services\Nwithout knowing the details as to- I will be meeting with the head of View Trading, Isao. A man dubbed likely to be the next head of Ikesuka. What? "Isao?" Never heard of him! He has plans to deal with the\Nair pirate and energy problems. Insisting on using the capital and connections of\Nmajor corporations, making himself a hero to the public. But I can't stand him. What's the plan? The problem will be with how\Nwe coordinate with the security units. What?! Reona, are you seriously thinking of doing this? No thanks! I'm in! I wanna see some action this time! We don't even know what numbers we'll be up against\Nor where they're coming from. Isn't this a tad rash? I already have plans that day. Plans I cannot change. So that's one "yes" and two "no". And counting me that's two of us with some reservations. No, we should take this. We need it. Why? Defending Rahama cost us lots\Nin repairs and maintenance. We need to make up for that. Well... Why?! I thought we were supposed to be treated equal here! I'm not trying to force you. I'm simply saying we should do this. This is tyranny! We're supposed to talk these things out! Stupid Reona! Leave my lil' Malo alone! Stop it! Change of schedule. Tomorrow I will wake up at 0700. I will spend fifteen minutes on\Nbreakfast instead of thirty five. Stop it, you idiot! And I will no longer spend an hour and\Nforty five minutes staring off into space. You've gotta be kidding me! If only I were, Master Isao. Well that's awful news. The Doburoku, Shirokuma, and Elite\Nsquadrons all cost me a fortune. Those KOTOBUKI gals sure know\Nhow to get under my skin. The Ouni Company and Councilor Julia, too. My humblest apologies for disappointing you. Guess if we want this done right we'll need\Nto have someone take charge themselves, yeah? Someone smart and incredibly decisive who\Ncan run the whole world by themselves. That'd be the easiest, most effective,\Nand absolutely perfect way to handle this. Someone like me, perhaps? Most certainly. It's about time we move out and\Nstomp out all the blockheads that fail to see this wonderful and\Never so dashing vision of mine! Unless of course they're willing\Nto start licking a few boots. I'd be willing to give 'em some work if they did.\NEven spare a bit of cash! Speaking of work, it was most unfortunate\Nthat we lost that Yufang engineer. What's the matter, you scared? It's so incredible! It's really something, hey Ol' Sab? This is what Ijitsu looks like up here, huh! Yup. But this isn't everything. I see what you're trying to pull. It was the same back in Yufang. You'll just toss me out once you're done with me. We would do nothing of the sort.\NAid our cause and we'll see you are rewarded. Ol' Sa-! You've never thought about going back? I'll be around again. What a cute little girl. Your daughter? Never seen her. Yes he has! I'm Kylie! Quiet! Go on home. And never come back here again. If we had won him over, we might have moved\Nyour plan some five years ahead of schedule. What kind of foolish, foolhardy fool would say no to me? I honestly don't get it. Ol' Sab! That's not fair! Don't leave without me! I still haven't seen anything yet! You really found it. Out in Areshima? Do you want to travel to Yufang, Allen? Of course I'd like to see it for myself. But more than that I want to know why\Nthey showed up here and then just vanished. Let me make one thing clear, though... I'm not researching them simply because\NI have a taste for Yufang alcohol! I know. It looks like I was right to leave you in Reona's hands. You smile a lot more than you used to. How's the KOTOBUKI Flight Corps? Having fun? I'm not sure. Have you ever seen Kate smile before? Nope. And I've never seen her\Nget mad or cry or anything either. I'll come by again. Say hi to Reona for me. Tell her she should bring a nice bottle\Nand come by and visit sometime. I guess he sorta looks like Kate... But he's so talkative, and he drinks, too. I do, yes. Are you two in the KOTOBUKI Corps, too? Uhh, well... Y-yes. You probably have to look after Kate plenty. How is she? Does she get along with everyone? I mean, she's a total weirdo sometimes, but yeah. Hey hey, how did you know we were out here? Guess it's just my old pilot senses kicking in. Always need to stay aware of your surroundings, right? I'm pretty sure Kate realized you were out here, too. What...? Yes. I did. Allen told me he met Reona back when he was a pilot. Yeah? What did he used to fly? When is he gonna get better? It's most likely he never will. Huh? Kate? Kate, what are you always reading about? Mathematics, chemistry, thermodynamics,\Nfluid mechanics... And as of late, electromagnetism. What about stories? Or novels or something? Fiction is pointless. The author is free to write whatever they wish. There is nothing to gain from such. You don't even find them fun? "Fun?" Stories are like food for the soul! That's what my brother Chito used to say! I'll lend you "See the Sea" sometime, 'kay? It's a real treat! What a dreary, awful smelling place. I'm sick of these sort of joints. But that's where its charm lies, is it not? Huh? That's a Standon Oil plane. What are big shot capitalists like\Nthem doing way the hell out here? Shouldn't you be worried more about an evacuation? And just let the little town burn? We should take this. Now Kate, mind explaining to me why? If we were to lose our access to Nanko's gas,\Nwe'd be forced to deal with other oil fields. Ones further away and far more expensive. That will leave us with no choice but\Nto purchase from affordable places like Standon. But Standon's gas is poor in quality. And they are likely to monopolize\Nthe industry and spike up their prices. The whole place is up in flames, huh... Hmm? The Madame's never wrong, is she? Looks like company's coming out to greet us. What are they flying? Shokis, maybe? It might be the same group that hit the airfield. If they're flying Type 2s, we can handle them. Those aren't Type 2s, they're Type 4s! They're flying Hayates? What kinda air pirates have Hayates?! They're built basically the same as the Type 2s. Just with more power and better turning! Why do stinking air pirates get to fly\Nsuch fast planes? That's not fair! Are these really even pirates? Oh come on, why do we have to deal with\Nthis sort of stuff on today of all days? I can't even fight back! Bwah! Kate we're gonna dodge 'em! Roger. Kylie, if things look bad, drop that bomb\Nand make an emergency landing! No way! We're putting out those fires! Kylie, approach our target from our eight o'clock.\NThen veer off at two o'clock. Okay! Pull up to two thousand. Here we go! Kate, what are you doing?! Lighting the fuse. This is an IED, after all. I've already calculated the timing. Kylie, drop the load when we're 200 meters out. You sure we can't drop it a little earlier? Absolutely not. I can feel my butt puckering already! 800 meters. 600 meters. Ready... Go. Hiyah! Kylie, good work. Fires extinguished. Make an immediate retreat.\NThere is no reason to drag this out any further. Now that's what it feels like to be alive! Nothing but a cold beer tastes quite like life itself! It says here, "The sea is whispering..." But the sea is not a living being. It doesn't mean it literally was, it's just a metaphor! Stories like these don't just explain everything like that. You're supposed to build the world\Nfor yourself as you read it! Build it...? That's what my brother Chito always said! Is that "See the Sea?" Wasn't there some drunkard just like Allen in that story? A person who loved his drink so much\Nhe tried to keep all the liquor to himself. Well more a crab than a person. All to himself...? Down under the sea there were\Nthese springs of alcohol, see? And this one crab who lived by one\Njust wanted to drink even more and more. Oh my, sounds like the drink is what drank him! And so he thought up a plan. If he plugged up all the other springs,\Nhe figured more would shoot up from his. Speaking of things that seem off... Well in the end he just ends up running\Nhis own spring dry, and no longer gets to drink, though. I bet those black Hayates just wanna\Nkeep all the liquor to themselves, too! You think they're traveling the world, plugging up\Nwherever it comes from so they can control it all? That'd be some grand sort of plan. Hey, I think Kate's smiling! No way! Uh, yeah. I'm totally not seeing it. Multiple bogeys spotted on our eleven. First Officer! He's still holed up in the restroom. Are you sure these aren't just aircraft\Nthat are cutting across our path? They're moving straight at us, so that is unlikely. With the First Officer still away,\Nwe await your orders now, Madame. All pilots prepare for battle! What?! We're up against huge numbers. They sure didn't keep us waiting! Here they come! Look at all of 'em! We're looking at what, fifteen or so? That's two and a half targets for each of us. We have a reading on possible bogeys\Npulling in fast from the rear. Incoming report from the rear watch. Confirmed sight of enemy craft approaching. It appears they hugged the ground\Nand flew in under our radar. KOTOBUKI Flight Corps, fall back immediately! New targets closing in! This is a message to the mayor of Ikesuka. We have taken control of the Rahama airship\NHagoromo and are en route to Ikesuka now. We demand the following from\NMayor Isao and the city of Ikesuka. First, that Isao resigns as mayor. Second, that the Brotherhood of Freedom Union\Nbe abolished immediately. If you refuse to accept either of these conditions,\Nwe will crash the Hagoromo into Ikesuka. Setting off a massive explosion. I've got eyes. And we're still in line? Indeed. We should be right in the radar\Nblind spot Addie told me of. I'm off! Be careful. Are those...? Explosives. What are we gonna do? Can you defuse those? Not a chance. Let's find Johnny. Why? You need a drink? No... Oh my! I'm so sorry. Johnny! I can't believe I shot someone! What else do you keep that thing back there, for? It's just a lucky charm! With aim like that it's no wonder you used\Nto be known as the fastest shot around. Johnny the Uncatchable! Don't call me that! I promised Miki I'd never take up arms again! In a sad turn of events the Hagoromo has been hijacked. And we've confirmed that they\Nare indeed headed for Ikesuka now. Are we going to be okay? Definitely not! But turning misfortunes like these upside down\Nis what we of the Brotherhood are here for! We have been preparing for just this sort of event! To all my beloved Hagoromo crew. My apologies for the current situation. But the time to sit patient is now over. Here it comes, what's the code word? The captain takes flight at daybreak. Nice one, Loulou! Freeze! Yes! As you wish! I shot them... Don't you run! I'm gonna tear you down and beat you back into shape! Leave them to us! It's no good! They've cut off access to the gas reserves! We'll do what we must to fulfill our mission. If that means we have to go down too- It's time you accept defeat. And it looks like we do! Get off me! What kind of brute uses real bullets on an airship? Is there any way we can land this thing? None whatsoever. The backup system is out, too. Betti, what's our estimated location? We are likely 30 kilometers south of Ikesuka. Johnny, have you dealt with those explosives? Unfortunately this isn't looking easy. My apologies! How long will it take? Roughly... An hour? Can't we turn off the engines manually? The doors to all the engine rooms have been destroyed,\Nand it will take time to get through them! So we're on a non-stop, out of control flight\Nto Ikesuka with a load of bombs on board? Reona, this is Loulou. Reona, here. This is an order. Shoot down the Hagoromo. Now I don't want you tearing it apart\Nand sending it falling. So what I need you to do is make sure we lose\Njust enough helium to make an emergency landing. But that's ridiculous! Plus, you're packed with explosives, right? Have you handled those, yet? No. But then...! I need you to pull this off. Roger that, Madame! All right. Just one more! Make this one count! Got it! We did it! Good grief. They certainly know how to disappoint. What's with that sleepy face? I'm just so bored. Everyone else sure seemed busy. They sure love to work, huh? And here we were with a whole month off. I'd think almost anyone would jump at the chance\Nfor work with a twenty percent raise. Not you? I'd go if I could just fly wherever I want however I want. Well that wouldn't be work now, would it? I always thought you loved the work you do. I mean, I don't hate it! It's how I get to fly. I'll clean that up for you if you aren't going to finish it. What?! Not a chance! I thought so. What, you want me to tell you a story? Mhmm. Well when you put me on the spot like that... How about a story of how the brave\NKOTOBUKI Flight Corps put on a fantastic show? And how their popularity sky rocketed, and\Nthe phones have rung off the hook to get 'em booked? That's a boring story. Okay then... How about how the Ouni Company has\Ntemporarily called off all operations? All pilots are free to take on side jobs,\Nand they'll still get their normal salaries, too! First Off, you're the most boring person ever. I get that a lot. Do you want to hear what I have for you today,\Nor what I have for you tomorrow? I wanna hear whichever is better. Well that all depends on you. It sounds like a great chance. You seriously think so? I'd at least be a little tempted. You're awful. I mean, flying is flying, right? We all need money, too. Can you at least quit drinking while we're up here? Why? 'Cause I said so! Oh, fine then. Sorry. It's not like I've got time to waste with you out here. I'm super busy with all my can-kicking\Nand soul searching. Say Thunderbolt, do you remember\Nwhen the hole closed up? Quit calling me that. It was seventy years ago. Nope! What?! There's reason to believe it has\Nopened and closed again since then. Yeah right! Did you see it? You didn't, did you? I guess not. Because I was shot down by some unidentified planes\Njust before I found the proof I needed. And I've been stuck in a wheel chair,\Nnever making it up above 60 centi-khrill since. Sure, this was probably a smaller hole. Nothing of\Nthe scale of the one that brought the Yufang here. But if it did in fact open... Then what? Someone may have made their way here\Nand done whatever it is they came to do. What? What's that supposed to mean? Or maybe they did nothing at all. That's a big difference! Huh? What...is that? Uh, hello? Huh? Oh. Is that... the hole? Not an open one, yet. It's probably just going to disappear. Is there a chance it might open? There is. That's incredi- Who-what-why?! Maybe I was a little too focused on\Nmy calculations and observations. You think?! Uh-oh. Are those Shiden-kai? Hmm... Those aren't the sorts you want to face in\Nthis under-powered Type 95 Intermediate Trainer. Well that's an understatement! It's been so long since I've been in a dogfight! This is so exciting! Are you crazy? It's not even a "fight" if we don't\Nhave any means of fighting back! Just like you wouldn't call an army chasing\Ndown an unarmed civilian a war! True! Huh? I've got a little favor to ask. What? See, I've got much better aim with a little drink in me. Whaddya say? If you're lying, you're really in for it. I'd never! Tell me Thunderbolt, what sort of flaws\Ndo you think those birds have? Uhh... they're too heavy? There's that. But even more than that, they're just too fast. What?! Plus, they aren't built for turns. They have to take these big, long arcs. This 95 might be slow, under-armed, and paper-thin,\Nbut we can use that all to our advantage. They're coming straight at us! Thunderbolt, point us down. Uh-huh! They're in my blind spot! Can you roll right? C'mon! What the heck?! What are we gonna do?! Steady now, steady. You think I'm going down? Not a chance!\NNot in your wildest dreams! Got 'em! Now that felt good! You're pretty good at faking dead, Thunderbolt! Not that I ever wanted to be! Don't let your pride get the better of you! Just shrug it off, shrug it off! I never would have... I've already talked with Kylie,\Nbut I want you to tell the others. What's your stance, Madame? I have none. I don't plan on meddling in your decisions. Things will go as they go. It's pointless trying to force others to do as you wish. Not impossible, but "pointless?" Oh yes. What would you consider as having a "point," then? The freedom to choose. Interesting... You sure do love getting shot down, doncha? Probably even more than you like\Nshooting other people down, huh? Chika, watch your mouth! This was more of an accident than anything else. Yeah, ok? And you, show some more appreciation\Nto Chika for coming out to save you! What?! Oh thank you so very much, Chika. I am simply glad you are all right. Thank you, thank you, and thank you. Oh, nonsense. Oh yeah! Madame! I'm not leaving the Corps! Is that so? I don't wanna take orders from or\Nhave to listen to anyone but Reona. Plus, another hole might open up over Rahama soon! I don't wanna miss that! Huh? What?! That's really another hole, then? That's not really how I imagined them. Is this what you meant when you\Nsaid Isao wouldn't let Rahama be? In hindsight it seems like he's been after nothing but\Nsecuring these holes for himself the whole time. That's why he's been ruthlessly hunting down anyone\Nwho tries to learn more about them. Excuse me everyone, but would\Nyou mind taking a look at this? If you want to know why Shouto was bombed... It's because it was the most likely location\Nfor the hole to open over. But as it turns out, the hole opened up over Rahama. You mean he's gonna come bomb Rahama next, then?! Excuse me, if I may. I come as a messenger from\Nthe Brotherhood of Freedom Union. This is a final warning from Chairman Isao himself. He demands that Rahama join\Nthe Brotherhood of Freedom Union. Fail to meet these terms, and we will be forced\Nto bomb Rahama in twenty-four hours time. Truly, truly! A most unfortunate of situations. Don't pretend you don't plan on leveling this place\Nto the ground like you did to Shouta either way! You brute! What ever do you mean, Miss Turncoat? You monster! You demon! Chairman Isao is a most honorable man and issued\Nhis warning a full twenty-four hours in advance. Not a single life was lost. That's it! He just wants the city emptied! So he can have the hole all to himself. His demands are simple. I hope you will speak for all of Rahama now,\Nand not be tempted by the words of this criminal here. What'll it be? I just can't! What? What I'm trying to say is that, well, Rahama is... Not going to submit to your demands! Get lost! Get lost! Get lost! Well that is most unfortunate. Perhaps today was just not a good day? Not that you'll have any better days now. Nice work! Mayor! You sure showed 'em! Nicely done! I want to knock out their numbers\Nbefore they make it to Rahama. The only problem is our firepower and ability to reload. That's where my secret weapons come in! It's freezing up here. But it's so quiet, too. And the sky's so blue. I wish Ol' Sab was here to see this. I wonder if he's already seen it, though. This is it! Got a hit! But that thing's armored! I feel like it's getting even bigger. It's holding its form, too. I wonder how big it is now. I want priority put on ammunition!\NDon't worry about fuel, just fill up what you can. Anyone who slacks gets a thirty-seven millimeter\Nshoved right up their rear! By all means! Roger! Hurry up! Shoot! Kept you waiting, huh? Take that! Enemy bombers only 13 kilo-khrill away! Don't let them drop those bombs on Rahama! All vigilantes focus on those escort fighters! Leave the bombers to the KOTOBUKI Corps! Only 3 kilo-khrill until they reach Rahama! Aim for the base of their main wings! Follow my lead! Hey, hey! Why don't we just\Nblow up those bombs of theirs? That's unrealistic. Is it? Those bombs are well armored. And piercing that plating won't be enough to set them off! We did it! Finally got one down. Only two to go! They're just two kilo-khrill out! We don't have enough time... Don't give up! We're too late! Dangit! It's gone... I've had a bit of a revelation recently. Might I inquire as to what? I realized I simply cannot stand obstinate,\Nunseemly, charmless, miscreants who refuse to die. Maybe it's time I get a bit more hands-on? I've had my fill of waiting. My good people, I am forever grateful that you have\Nassembled before me here this day. Why, you may ask? Because you have chosen\Nto gracefully share in our peace and happiness! But let us not forget! This world is full of\Nmiscreants who would seek to stop us! The hole is what once brought us the Yufang! It brought us prosperity! It brought airplanes, anti-air artillery,\NYufang liquor, curry and rice, and even pancakes! But our enemies now wish to take\Nits blessings for themselves! These heinous criminals spare no thought\Nfor anyone but themselves! These criminals are the people of Rahama! They tried to keep our long awaited\Nnew hole all to themselves, but failed! And just like that it was gone once again. We of the Brotherhood of Freedom Union will\Nnot forgive any who side with Rahama or Porokka! We must not allow these criminals to keep to themselves,\Nstealing away the wonders of the holes from us! The Brotherhood of Freedom Union\Nis the only path to world peace! And that is because only the Brotherhood\Nof Freedom Union has the power to make it a reality! The Brotherhood of Freedom Union is the best! He goes around preaching of brotherhood this and\Nfreedom that, but it's all just fancy talk. All he's after is consolidating\Nall power into his own hands! How can they not see that? That's what we're here for, isn't it? You'd better believe it! Damned if I'll ever let Isao tell me what to do! If he did take control the world\Nwould be as good as finished. Ijitsu would be split into three classes. Isao, his followers, and... His slaves. This is the Ofukouyama squad. We've reached the target airspace. All right! We've got eyes on\Nthe Union air force! On our ten! Looks like roughly a hundred fighters. That's fewer than intel reported. Another hundred or so, on our one o'clock. That puts them at around two hundred... Okay everyone, are you ready for this? You bet! You'll be safe with me covering you, captain Naomi! Yeah, no thanks. What?! Come on! Don't be like that, captain! I'm Adolfo Yamada, of the Nazarin- Camilla, you know what our job is\Nand what we're here to do, right? Don't you go chasing any of them down! Of course! A grudge is a grudge! Gotta stay calm,\Ncool and collected! Gotta riddle them with holes! More importantly you gotta stay alive. Exactly. Now all fighters, prepare to engage! The Ofukouyama squad has\Nmoved to engage the enemy. Good! Good, good, good! They fell for it, then. Those idiots from Ikesuka and the Union\Njust threw two hundred fighters at a decoy! That's gotta be nearly all their aircraft. Don't let your guard down yet. They might still have more firepower than we know. C'mon now Julia, that doesn't sound like you. Overthinking things will just make you a coward! We've got all the intel we need right here.\NAin't that right, mate? Oh yes. According to my sources there\Nis no reason to doubt any of this. Well there you have it! We're gonna\Nwipe 'em all out! Now let's move out! What is it with men like that who think shouting\Ntheir orders will make any difference? I bet he thinks the louder he shouts\Nthe more power he wields. What an ingrate. Now now, girls. Let's curb the slander, shall we? No, feel free. They're entirely right about Gaudreau there. But everything comes in handy when used properly. And right know Porokka's\Nmilitary force is just what we need. You seem pretty confident about all this. Of course. We might be a rag tag assortment,\Nbut we have them beat in sheer numbers. This is anyone's battle. I prefer to abstain from gambling\Nwhen I'm just as likely to lose as win. But if we pass up this opportunity,\Nour chances of winning only go down from here. So this is really our only chance, then. Exactly! I sure hope Miki made it safely out of Porokko. I haven't heard word from her, and I'm so worried... Why would she get in touch with you? I'm sure you've guessed as much,\Nbut we don't have any time to waste. First we need to hit the factories\Nproducing those bombers! Right, and those would be where...? Oh, yeah. Right there. Our target is 25 clicks southwest of central Ikesuka. The Fugaku construction assembly plant! Wind speeds are at 17 khrill, blowing in at 90 degrees. First officer, your orders, sir! Move the bridge upwind! All engines, full speed ahead! On our twenty! Releasing the hatch! All fighters, prepare for takeoff! Hey, so uhh, I don't really get what's going on here.\NIsn't this kind of a cheap move? Well we drew out their main forces so we can close\Nin on their facilities, so you might say that. Diversions are perfectly acceptable military tactics. I hate these missions, though. It's such a pain\Nwhen we can't just fly however we want! I know what you mean, but I think we'd best avoid\Nbeing hasty and try and talk this all out. I would have to disagree. Oh my, and why's that? Reona seems to be forgetting that there are\Nsome people you just cannot reason with. The more trust you put in someone,\Nthe weaker you are when facing them. That may be, but her word is still good by me. Right or wrong. That's nonsensical. Where do you stand, Kate? Good or bad? Do it or don't? There are things I wish to clear up. What's that supposed to mean? This mission is my chance to clear up\Nthings I wish to make clear. What does that even mean? Kylie, quit lagging behind! Yeah, yeah. You're flying too low, too. Yeah, yeah. How can you be so lax? Kylie has seemed out of it for a while now, huh? Know what? I bet she's just scared! Nope. I was just thinking about what\Nwe're actually supposed to be doing out here. At a time like this? We're defending the Hagoromo and attacking Ikesuka. Defending the Hagoromo I can understand,\Nbut why are we attacking Ikesuka, again? Kylie! Were you in some other realm of existence\Nduring our briefing or something? No, I was listening. But none of\Nit really made sense to me. So a hole almost opened over Rahama, right? Then Isao showed up? And then Julia formed some kind of alliance. I get all that. But so what? What are we doing here? Are wars supposed to just be fought on a whim like this? Is that what the KOTOBUKI Flight Corps stands for? Orders are orders. And things are already in motion. I figured this lot was just a bunch of rag tag pilots,\Nbut they're better than I thought! Don't forget! This is for Shouto! For the theater they leveled on First Avenue! For the bakery and Takochu Park, too! Let them have it! You're m- My lady! Fear not! The world's dandiest man,\Nis here by your side! Whaddya think you're doing, eggplant for brains?! When I'm maneuvering behind an enemy fighter\Nyou should be making sure they can't pull away! W-well how am I supposed to know that? If you have to ask, then quit talking yourself up!\NYou're just wasting your breath! My lady, look out! Captain Naomi, on your five! What are you even out here for? If you're just gonna\Nfloat around up here, then quit wasting gasoline! I was trying to warn you... If you can't even cover me then you're good for nothing! Stay out of my line of sight, fish face! Sorry... Pummel that factory,\Nand we'll really curb the Union's firepower! Those big planes from the other day aren't here, huh? The Fugaku? Yeah, those! Perhaps the bombers we saw\Nthe other day were their whole fleet? That still doesn't explain why this place seems deserted. You'd figure they'd leave behind at least\Nenough people to defend the place. We're blowing this place up? Don't sweat the details. Light the place up! Where's our welcoming committee? There's no sight of 'em here.\NI bet they all ran away scared of us! Madame! Councilor Julia! It was a trap?! I count 200- No, wait... That's impossible!\NThey don't have those sort of numbers! What happened to that perfect intel of yours?! Gaudreau, sir, it would seem despite\Nall unlikelihood that you were wrong. I was what, now?! I believe it is about time I make a career change. The pleasure has been all mine! Are you telling me you were a double agent?! You have my best wishes! Send the order to retreat. If we don't do so this instant, our fifty-fifty chance\Nwill quickly become much more of a gamble. We can't! Julia, it would seem we made light of Isao. We've lost. Full retreat! Turn us around! Turning now! Bearing 180! Alert the decoy squad! Roger! Gaudreau, it's Julia. The Hagoromo\Nis retreating. You'd best as well. Retreat isn't even on the table for us! You'll be wiped out at this rate! It's talk like that that's gonna cost us this battle! We can still win! And so the tricksters have become the tricked. Do you have any other options or back up plans? Not really, no! But this is just too cruel... Why don't you call that ex-wife of yours?\NShe might even worry about you, now. Even now it's only a "might"? Come on! Go away! Whew! Thank you, Naomi! How do they expect us to retreat from all this?! Well, we can't just have you running off\Nwithout paying for what you've done. This time it's our turn! I would appreciate it if you would stick\Naround with us just a tad longer. Hmph, fine then. Those Type 5's aren't half bad, huh? I was just in the mood for a near death battle! You two bastards better keep up! What?! Aren't we retreating? That one there's all yours! All my- What?! Engines 21 and 23 have been knocked out! Engine 12 has been knocked clean off! There's no turning back now! You have to retreat! So much for your day of dominance, huh?! I never claimed such to begin with! Dammit! How am I supposed to face up to Chika\Nif I can't even put her teachings to work here?! Keep your wits about you, Tokiwagi!\NDon't take this too far! We need to focus on each of them, one by one! You ain't gotta tell me! Rahama still has its secret weapon! And it's time you had a taste of it! Fires have broken out in block 13!\NWe can't put these out! Keep at it! The enemy's falling back! All we gotta do is push through this, and we win! Are you seeing this? Something just went down! The Hagoromo?! It appears to be the Porokka flagship. How could this be? Reona... We retreat! Fall back and protect the Hagoromo! Got it! What the heck is that thing?! Oh yeah! This is what I call a scuffle! May the last plane flying win! Oh this is so exciting! Isao, sir, please fall back. There is no need\Nfor you to fly head-first into this conflict. How did that saying go again? That old Yufang one... What? Oh yeah! The real fool's the fool that doesn't fool around at all! Zara, will you fly with me? I'm with you. I assume that's you, Isao, chairman of\Nthe Brotherhood of Freedom Union! Huh? I'm Reona, captain of the Ouni Company's\NKOTOBUKI Flight Corps from Rahama! When I was still a fresh pilot, you once saved my life. I just want to talk with you! Uhh, talk about what, exactly? I'm not really\Nin the mood for anything complicated! I don't want us fighting pointless battles. I'm sure neither of us wish to see\Nthe loss of any more lives! That's true. If you issue the order,\Nour side will surely agree to a ceasefire. I'll do what I can to make sure of it! Yes, yes, and then? Please allow us to retreat! Sure. I knew you were not the person everyone says you are! Just kidding! Reona! I told you I don't like getting\Nall caught up in complicated stuff! How dare you do that to her! Well lookie here, another new face! Hi there, newbie! I'm no newbie, I'm Kylie! We met in Areshima! We did? You know, I think I do remember\Nthat mark on your tail, there. But I don't remember you being a girl. Or young, either! What?! It was just some old fool who got left behind\Nwhen the Yufang disappeared from Ijitsu. A real stubborn guy. Indeed. A mulish man stuck in his old ways. We call them the Yufang here, but they call\Nthemselves the Japanese Army, you know! Yes indeed. Not the Yufang, but the Japanese. Apparently that guy was some sorta\N"mill-ee-terry" engineer or something. But no matter how many times we talked\Nhe'd never listen to what we told him. He even tried fleeing. Ol' Sab...! Maybe he just didn't like to fight? Despised it, I'm sure. Who knows, though? Indeed, we have no way of knowing now. Nope! 'Cause he was such a pain that we shot him down! Stinks to be him, huh? Abandoned by the Yufang only to be shot\Ndown by me. Not a happy ending! I wonder what he's up to now? Probably rotting away somewhere out in the wastelands. You miserable stinkin' buttface! Lemme tell you about Ol' Sab! Huh? What? What's the matter? Ol' Sab! He hated people like you! We can shoot down one after another but there's no end! Chika, on your two o'clock! Above you! Those aircraft far outclass ours! What are we gonna do? Chika, here they come! Get ready to evade! Gotcha! That does it! Chika! That was excellent! Yikes! People can see my underwear from down there! I'll be right down to pick you up. You just sit tight. Engines 2, 4, and 6 are down! Engines 1 and 7 at 30% output! This is bad. Real bad! Then why do you look so excited? I was just thinking how I feel so alive! I suppose you won't really "feel" it when we're dead. Helium leaks in sections 2 and 4 cannot be stopped! We'll need to abandon the balance\Non the bridge to realign! They really won't make this easy for us, will they? Mayor! Coming, coming! Enemy formation coming in on our nine! All right, all right! I can't handle them\Nall with this thing, you know! I'm done for! Mind if we join you, then? In this big gamble-\NI mean big opportunity here?! Who's that? Who is that? Who are you? The CEO and big boss of Elite Industries, Torihei! Here they come! Seriously though, what? Aww, here I was thinking maybe he'd taught you\Na thing or two, but I guess not, huh? That old man wasn't good for much,\Nbut he was great in the cockpit of his Zero there, at least. He flew it like a hawk! Buh-bye, now. Will we meet again? Nope, I doubt it! Carelessness is your worst enemy. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind... There's something I want to ask you. Are you the one who shot Allen down? I sure am. A plane's emblem is like an actor's makeup. It's gotta be nice and clean.\NDo a sloppy job and no one will take you seriously. You hear me? As you wish! Roger! This just might be the last performance for these birds,\Nso let's make sure they look spiffy! We'd best take along everything we can.\NThe Hagoromo needs be left light as can be! I wish I could take this little fella with me... Little what now? Did you truly scribble right on the wall like that? This was my bedtime buddy. Yes, well... It may be adorable, but you cannot take it with you. I know, but... 'Kay! I asked the little guy to look\Nafter the Hagoromo for us! That's a load off my shoulders! Why pray to the divine when you can pray to the drawn? Kate, I never imagined you would\Nspeak anything so unscientific. Well, such acts have a measurable impact. They put one at ease, letting them think more clearly. Mhm! Well then, with the Hagoromo\Ntaken care of, that just leaves... Kylie. This may well be the hardest part. Yeah, I bet she's busy licking her wounds as we speak. What wounds? She may have been shot down,\Nbut she avoided any serious injury. To anything but her pride, that is. These are your belongings. You seemed to have forgotten them on the Hagoromo. You coulda just left it all there. I don't need any of it. No, huh? Guess I'll help myself, then! Wow! Jackpot! This here is a particular rarity.\NMust be worth at least five pounds. Oh my! I would love to set this atop the mantle at home. Quit prying at stuff that doesn't- Huh? What did you even hang on to all this junk for, anyway? Oh, that was a gift from Maria. And this? Bought that the first time we were in Gadoll. And you picked on Chika for her stuffed toy... It's all just a bunch of junk. Treasure and junk aren't all that different, huh? What? Treasure's only treasure because it's special, right? Well if what's junk to someone else is special\Nand important to you, then it's treasure, right? Kylie, this cherry blossom... Huh? Oh... Explain this blossom to me. Is there any correlation to the time you\Nonce called Kylie a "cherry blossom thief"? Oh yeah! I remember that! What was that all about? It must have been seven or eight years ago now. Stop, thief! Is this a blossom from back then? Yup! You really got on my case for breaking off a branch. Tree can't stand to lose a twig? Have you never heard the old saying,\N"prune your plum trees, but not your cherry trees"? It was just so pretty, I had to get a closer look. You can't be any older than me,\Nyet you work posting deliveries. Why? The why's pretty simple. I gotta fend for myself. Certainly you can rely on someone to- Ugh, is there anything more bleh? "Bleh," is it? Yeah, no thanks! I'm me,\Nand I don't want anyone telling me otherwise! Silly me, I was so moved by\Nthat baseless confidence of hers. Silly you? Now it all makes sense!\NI thought you two were an odd pair. A chance encounter and\Nmiraculously ongoing partnership. I bet it took a lot of patience on Emma's part,\Nseeing how pea-brained Kylie is. Oh yeah? Wanna say that again?! Such a quick temper, too. Still though, working as a team\Nof six isn't so bad, now is it? Maybe not. But I still feel like I coulda done better. That's the most frustrating part. You handle yourself like a pro. Seems I'm more cut out for this than flying. So you're not looking to get back out there? Adolfo, don't push him. I fit in 'round here. That's all that matters! The best pilots aren't the ones that never get shot down. The best pilots are the ones still alive. I know. But how many times am I going\Nto repeat the same old mistakes? At least you're still alive. At least you're still here. Still captain of the KOTOBUKI Flight Corps. Yeah. Reona! Zara! The briefing's about to start. Come on inside. So that's the plan. It's going to be tough, but if we all work\Ntogether it's certainly not impossible. "Not impossible." Which means far from likely. Chances of success are around- The helmsman of the Hagoromo is\Nthe cornerstone of our strategy. A high-speed, controlled flight\Nto our destination is the crux of the plan. Quick thinking and decisiveness are\Nalso a must in getting us out alive. Don't worry though, this was my idea, so I'll- Hold it now! I'm First Officer of the Hagoromo,\Nand I will be responsible for her until the very end! Seriously? You? Quit acting so surprised! What? You're going, too? Why is that less surprising?! You know, I kinda like those Nazarin guys,\Nand all the folks from Rahama and Elite and all, too. I do believe that's what one might\Ncall friendship or comradery. Oh. So this is what you mean by not flying alone. Took you long enough. Now then, let's get moving. Let's get this all taken care of\Nso we can come right back home. I can hear the beer calling! I agree. All right, gather 'round, girls. Fly high, KOTOBUKI Flight Corps! Yes ma'am! It's unfortunate that things had to work out this way. Is it? Loulou! There's one last thing I want to say to you! First Officer. Thank you for your service. I hope you will help us see this through to the end. Oh no, yeah, thanks... I'll be here! What are you looking at? It's those long pauses of his that\Nmake things so uncomfortable, yes? You think so? I see them as\Nmore of one of his strengths. You truly are a wicked woman. How rude. You do this all hands off then, and let\Nyour little minions dance around for you, don't you? I simply prefer to leave the dancing to the dancers. If I were as clever as you, perhaps Gadoll would have\Nfaced a different fate. Now now Julia, let's not go talking\Nas if this is over already. True. We still have work to do. Whether this is a battle for\Nnew beginnings or a new end, well... Well, whatever happens, happens! Don't you so much as flinch! We fight to the bitter end! I don't care if you're the last man standing, you fight! Naomi squadron, make your approach\Nfrom your eight o'clock. Your target is Isao Tower. What? We're under attack? They don't even\Nstand a chance. Why even bother? They foolishly believe that\Nwhere there's a will, there's a way. I wish they wouldn't rush to their deaths like this. If they would just submit and obey I would give them\Nmore work than they could ever hope for! I have given the evacuation orders for\Nthe civilians and secured their safety. Master Isao, you should also hurry and- Boy I sure do wanna get out there and fight! Repairs will still take some time. Not much we can do about that, huh?\NGuess we just stall for time, then? Good grief. I'm normally much more suited for non-manual labor! Oh my! Anti-air towers?! We didn't have those in Shouto. Ikesuka sure is something else! Air combat sure is fun, huh! Can't beat the rush you get\Nshooting down another plane. Getting shot down sure does stink, though. Why do these people even bother fighting\Na fight they know they can't win? Are they stupid, or just obsessed? Isao's forces don't seem to have\Nspotted the KOTOBUKI Corps yet. Kylie, Chika, you two move in from\Nthe Sugar Crystal District. Emma and Kate, you push right\Nthrough the Snuggy-wuggy Swamp. Zara and I will head straight for Isao Tower. Reona, what do you say the two of us just run away. Why not just leave all of this behind and\Nlive out a new life somewhere far away? Somewhere you can do whatever\Nit is you really want to do. That's out of the question. We have a duty here. We have no such thing. There's not a single thing out here\Nwe have any obligation to do. So why don't you share some of that\Nburden you carry with me, sometimes? I want to stay with you. Zara- Take a look at that! The sky's all weird! It's a new hole. What? Already?! That's a little sooner than I expected,\Nand a bit off course. I figured it'd be at least a short ways out. But it's right above them. Which means? Isao has definitely noticed. We have a report from the Shouto Squadron. An additional thirty enemy aircraft spotted taking off. Assume these fighters are headed out\Nto deal with the KOTOBUKI Corps. Busted, huh? Just how badly do they want this thing for themselves? Less than five minutes until contact. We don't stand a chance against numbers like that. Girls, I don't suppose any of you have any suggestions? Two heads are better than one. What's that supposed to mean? It means if we all think together,\Nwe might come up with a better plan. Well six heads must be way better than one,\Nso get ready for the best plan of all! So... How about we focus on low, narrow spaces? So we take the fight straight into the city? Mhmm! Our Hayabusas' strength is in their handling.\NThey're perfect for taking out those anti-air towers, too. It's time we show these fiends\Nthat speed is not everything. All right, then we take the fight into the city! The city, huh... Yup, and we show them everything we're made of. Got it! Zara. Yeah? You think things will be okay\Nwithout me pulling all the strings? Of course! Why would we even be a team at all\Nif any of us could do this all on our own? Thanks. Okay girls, are you ready? Yee-up! Of course. Absolutely! I'm ready! Let's do this! All right! Fly high, KOTOBUKI Flight Corps! Yes ma'am! Flying straight down New Brotherhood Avenue\Nhere is the shortest route to the tower. All blocked off, is it? I suppose we might have guessed. We can still turn and head straight up Trust Boulevard. We move on our three, then! Kate! This is Kate. The rockets on that unidentified craft appear\Nto be equipped with a proximity fuze. Stay alert. What should we do? You can't just evade, you need to circumvent them\Nwith sweeping turns. Big ones! Big ones? Huge ones! Proximity fuze missiles don't need to land hits\Nbecause they detonate in proximity of their targets. But how can they tell when they're close? Via radar. This is going to be a problem. We need to split up! Emma, follow Reona and I. As you wish. This is Kate. I've been downed on Hope Boulevard. Copy that. We're on our way to get you as we speak. Would she even shed a tear if I died? To think the day would come when\NI would need to take up arms again. I've heard that line more than once before. Oh no, but this truly was an unexpected turn! Let's just hope it's the last. Though it may be the last in more ways than one... Loulou... What the heck! Don't just barge in like that! I'm going, I'm going! No! Don't look! People like you who incite the innocent and\Nseek to steal away what little we have for yourselves... Don't deserve these skies! Isao and the air pirates are pretty\Nmuch one in the same, huh? I refuse to believe your twisted lies of peace,\Nhappiness, and prosperity! It went off- -on that part sticking out there! Let's get rid of this jerk! Okay! Here we go! Yup! Did we get him? I think so! We're real aces! Chika! They got me! Chika, are you all right?! I'm good! I'll wait for pickup here, you keep going! Gah! We only had one of those lost little fighters there! When that one came through\Na hole had barely even opened. Don't think I don't know you're here to block off that hole! I'd say you're definitely better off with me around. I'm doing just fine right now without you. I don't mean now, I'm talking about our future! Our what? Do you seriously think\Nyou're gonna make it through this? I was born to defend you. You're not making a damn bit of sense! I'm proposing, okay? Proposing! I'm asking you to marry me! Are you daydreaming over there or something, buddy? How about you tell me about those dreams\Nof yours once we survive all this? Kylie, get below the bridge! Oh, right! I'll see you... In Hell! I've been bested... But I certainly feel better now! It's time we settled our score! You do not have what it takes. Don't you dare think you can even touch her! Hatokichi! It's time! We only have two birds left!\NWhat kind of monsters are you?! They just shot one of their own down! Don't worry, I'm on your side! Now, my brother! Roger that! Got 'em! Brother! They got me! I can see that! Air pirates? What are they doing\Nfighting on Ikesuka's side? Don't tell me...! Now then, my friends, it's time to repay those debts! Show Ikesuka and myself thanks for all the aid\Nwe have always smuggled your way! Hey! Make sure you shoot some down for me, too! Impressive. But you are not quite as shrewd as I am. Ready the crane! Ugh, you're the worst! Anna, look! The hole! It's time. Farewell. You're time's just about up! Master Isao. To our snack-time o'clock! What is it? It's an airship, stay alert! No ordinary airship moves at speeds like that. There she goes! You better make this worth it! May the fortunes of war fall in your favor. Closing up a hole that big will take\Nmore than four tons of explosives. With that much it should blow in an instant. So that's it then? If they can't have it to themselves\Nthey aren't going to let anyone have it?! What a stupid, dimwitted, idiotic idea! I don't think so! You shoot down Ol' Sab, you attack Rahama,\Nand you still haven't had enough, you pighead?! I'm not gonna let you get away with this! Can you just leave me alone already? As kind as I may be, you don't want to make me angry! Kylie, you can't! You're gonna sink\Ninto the deep, dark sea at this rate! Remember the line in See the Sea! Anger and hatred only harden you like stone,\Nand once a stone sinks it never floats back up! You don't fly a plane... This is amazing, Ol' Sab! Wait, what? What did he just say? You don't fly a plane, they fly on their own. All a pilot needs to do is follow its lead. They fly... On their own! Okay! Time to finish you off! If anger and hatred are what hold me down... Then it's freedom that gives me wings! Nobody, and none of this sky, belongs to you! That's mine! It's mine, all mine, and just for me! It's going to be mine! Mine to dominate! Mine to manage!\NMine to control! Mine! It's not for anyone but me! Go! Hey you! Don't you dare just turn and run! Do you have any idea how much time and\Nmoney we spent on you, you traitors?! Was this really the right thing to do? Right how? Blowing up the hole like that. It might have brought us all sorts of stuff. And it might not have. You're right, Ol' Sab. I'm just gonna keep being me. I did this all by my own hands,\Nof my own free will, after all! Kylie are you there?! Come in! Come in already! I'm starving. You idiot! What?! I can't think of a more Kylie response than that! Are you making fun of me?\NAfter all the hard work I just did? Only real idiots go around\Ntelling people they worked hard! Oh shut up, I only said it 'cause\Nit's not like anyone else was gonna. Fine, oh yeah, you were so amazing. Now put some more feeling into it! I can hardly hold back these tears of joy for how\Nyou rid me of those bastards that plagued me so. What's with the poetry? You should have rolled a bit wider, huh? I miscalculated. I think I'll kick off my studies of\Nthese holes again when we get back. I'll help you. Maybe I'll just try and give her a call. Even though the Madame couldn't even sort things out? It might work better hearing it straight from me! Feel free, then. Doesn't this all feel pretty refreshing? How? We're free to do whatever we want now, is what I mean. Same as it's always been.\NAnd same as it always will be, huh? All right! I think it's time! Time for what? For me to step out of this Raiden\Nand pass it on to the next generation. So I get to pilot the Raiden now? In what world would that ever happen? I'll make sure the First Ave theater, the bakery,\NTakochu Park, and the cafeteria are all rebuilt! Now then, where to go next! Atazaki is a great place for a honeymoon. Atazaki it is, then. Well are we going to Atazaki, or not? What?! Do you take him for better, for worse,\Nfor richer, for poorer, for dumb, for dumber? Isn't he just gonna stick around anyway? Of course I am, my lovely! I'm going to buy myself a new handbag! And I'm going to buy some shiny, fancy sandals! When we get back it's straight to repairs and tuning! As long as we've got the parts,\Nthere's nothing we can't fix up. You best be ready! As you wish! Roger! The sheer number of problems we'll have\Nto deal with now is just dreadful. Though maybe this will finally shake some\Nsince into those fools in Gadoll. What a rough life. And what do you plan on doing now? The same as I always have. How, when you're flat out broke? By doing what little I can, bit by bit. I think I'll start with a nice shower when I get home. You never change. This is the Ouni Company, come in. It's a bright sunny day in Rahama today.\NWith winds blowing from the southeast at three khrill. Everyone is ready and waiting for your return. We're headed for Rahama now ourselves. Fly safe, everyone. We'll see you in Rahama! Oh, right! What? Does the name "KOTOBUKI"\Ncome from the Yufang word? Yeah, it means good fortune. I heard it was more like a word of congratulations. And for longevity. Sounds like it means all sorts of great things. Sounds like a perfect match for us. I wonder if we'll still be flying when we're all old. We sure will! Long ago, the world opened right up,\Nand lots rained down on us. Some good things. Some bad things. Some lovely things. Some tarnished things. There was all sorts of stuff. But now the world has closed up again. And while we slowly lose many of the things we have,\Nwe gain many more as well. And we live on, latching on to what we have. And we will continue living just this way.

SubsWhen It was a long, long time ago. A hole opened up under our world one day. And it drained the oceans. We were left with only barren land. There was nothing we could do but to accept it. We lived on with what we had. And then, the day came. It was a long, long ago, but not that long. A hole opened up in the sky. After that, those things known as "aircraft" came through. Those aircraft belonged to the people from Yufang on the other side of the hole. Since then, many more of their people came across. They hired us to work for them. The Yufang brought us aircraft and revitalized our lives. However, the Yufang suddenly hurried back one day. There was a panic, and they left many of their stuff behind. The hole closed soon after. And our contact with the Yufang ended. Some said they went back because the hole was about to close up. Others said they were about to lose a war on the other side of the hole. No one knew for sure. After the Yufang left, there was a fight\Nto seize what they had left behind. The bad, the good, the scammers, the scumbags,\Neveryone was fighting to have a share of it. Who was hostile? Who was friendly?\NWho was in the right? It was a complete mess. Some who were caught in the mess wished to turn the tide and took a gamble. This battle plunged the whole world into an unprecedented war. It was later known as the "Rinouchi War". After that, the disputes subsided. And peace returned once again. Congratulations. Congratulations. If only that was the case. Minor disputes continued. And air pirates were just as abundant. The world became barbaric, without empathy or reason. Although people were upset, their lives continued that way. This is the world we live in. "Ijitsu". You sure know the worst way of drinking it. Waitress, dancer, hawker, I've tried everything. But there's nothing I want to do. Unbelievable. Here, right before someone who can't reached their dream... There's someone who can do anything, but without any passion. Then... Can you take my hand, and bring me along? Defending against air pirates? There's this Ouni Company from where I live. They were looking for fighter pilots, and asked me to join. That sounds great. Let's take the job, Reona. We'd get better pay than doing simple delivery runs. That's true. But it won't be enough with just the two of us. Is that so? It'll be lonely with you leaving. I'm sorry, Tamil. I must work in order to feed my family. Contact me if you need anything. I'll always be there for you, Emma. Thank you. Reona, about joining the squadron, I'd recommend my sister. I wanna focus on my studies. Experience? None whatsoever. But Kate will become a much better pilot than I am. You have my word. All right, please take care of her. Experience with what? With controlling a fighter plane. Learning more about what you don't know will help you grow, Kate. Okay. What is she doing? She's about to crash. Wait for it. That's amazing. Reona's up against a talented pilot. An outstanding one, to say the least. The Northwest? Yes. I plan on expanding our delivery routes next month. That air space is filled with air pirates. A kid? I'm not a kid! Call me Madam Chika, you small fries! Well, my, my... You're good. I'll let you be my companions! Taking me head on with just four planes, you've got quite the guts! Do you even know what small fries means? Of course I do! I learned it all from See the Sea! It means all those who are simply irrelevant! Hey, that's quite dangerous. Is that... Someone you know? That's probably the sakura thief. A sakura thief? Delish! Pancakes are awesome! Kylie, I see you're having pancakes again. You sure don't get sick of them, huh? It's been a long time, Emma. Since when did you return to Rahama? Hold on, who are they? I'm here to recommend a job to you today. I refuse. Have you ever think about your future? The future? What's that? Sounds off-putting. I'm fine all by myself. I don't plan on teaming up with others. As expected. After all, cooperation is required in a squadron. You're simply not up to the task. Who's this shorty? If you're gonna be all alone, you better watch your mouth. It'll save yourself some trouble. Mind your own business, shorty! Hurry on home and read some picture books. You can stop with the shorty insult, dimwit! Do I have to teach you to speak properly? You're the one who needs to be taught! Stupid! Shorty! Stu-orty! Do you have a screw loose? Oh my, what a lively duo. I’ve had it. That's enough! For all the damages you've done, that'd be about 963 pounds and 21 sen. Splitting it two ways would mean around 480 pounds for the each of you. It's her fault! Excuse me?! You like planes, right? So-so. What about flying? I like it. How about losing? Hate it! That was an excellent landing earlier. Well, that's nothing special. I can do that, too. Lies! You're lying! Rather than flying solo, it'd be more fun flying together. You'd become stronger. Give it a try. After all, we're just a bunch of weirdos who happened to come across one another. Kylie. Don't forget about the sakura. I'm still waiting for you to pay up. This alarm is an automatic alert set off by readings on our radar. Radar shows movement bearing 340 degrees, on our two o'clock. We're picking up no large aircraft in that direction. But we have unidentified bogey moving in fast. Altitude is 600 khrill. Cloud base sits at 450 khrill. Winds are blowing in from 280 degrees. Wind speed is 4.5 khrill. We are currently positioned at A-E 145 degrees and 54 minutes. M-B 30 degrees and 17 minutes. What are our fuel reserves? 4,107 bottles. We can maintain course at current speeds for 695 more kilometers. Which means we have no chance of evading them. Do we have no escape routes? Tell me Maria, can you resist buying new shoes? Not a chance. Same goes for me and bags. That's how big of a chance we have. Things are looking grim, then. First officer. Requesting permission to launch fighters. We're really doing this? We're running out of time. So be it! Permission to launch all fighters! Oh, and uh... All hands man your battle stations! Anyone who can't keep up is gonna get an inertia handle cranked right up their butts! Roger! I thought we'd at least get off this time around. You're really naive, aren't you? The Nazarene are good to go already? That's what I like about these freelancers! Today's cargo is of particular importance. You are aware of this, yes? Yes, ma'am! Let my lovely little birdies know there's a bonus to be had today. For each and every plane they shoot down. For me, too? Lose even a single drop of that cargo and you're done. Get her started! Fire 'er up! All right. Same as always, two to a team— No wait, today we're in two teams of two and three. I finally feel awake. Zara, don't you go falling asleep on me out there. I'll be fine. I could pilot this thing in my sleep. Don't push your luck. Yeah, yeah. Kate, Emma, Kylie. The rear's all yours. As you wish. Roger that. Bandits sighted, two o'clock. Oh, this'll be fun! Fly high, Kotobuki Squadron! Yes, ma'am! I can't shake 'em! Rodriguez! Adolfo, behind you! Something's up. These aren't the regular sort of pirates. The Hagoromo's in trouble! These horrid pirates! Is that hostile or friendly?! It's hostile. We won't make it! Kylie, nice work! Enemy in retreat. No need for pursuit. All birds return to nest. Well, it's hard to imagine anything worse than being struck by calamity. But we were fortunate enough to get all the fires put out without a hitch. There wasn't even a single casualty. All thanks to the firefighters and our vigilante force. How splendid! This is 12.7 mm ammunition. A repacked junk shell. The sort that air pirates tend to use. Air pirates?! Oh no, they weren't pirates. They called themselves "Elite Industries". What a ridiculous name. They still attacked you though, didn't they? Aren't you guys supposed to be vigilantes? You just let them pummel you without even fighting back? All of us bravely fought as best we could! But our valiant efforts were for naught, and we exhausted all our options... So you lost, then. Tell us everything that happened. The name's Torihei, and I'm the president and CEO of Elite Industries. Truth is, we're here with a once in a lifetime sort of business proposal to share with you all today! What sort of proposal? Well you see, I've heard that your town has one fine fighter plane tucked away. So that's a Raiden? 1,800 horsepower. 50 kilometers per hour faster than the Hayabusa. Sporting four 20 mm cannons. But that all makes it so sluggish. I can't say I like it at all. This has been passed down as the mayor's personal craft, hasn't it? You can fly? I used to be a pilot, you know! Back then, they called me the Prince of Rahama— Yeah, yeah... maybe once upon a time, you were. What about those pirates, though? They'll be back in three days, right? Count me in! Wait... are you serious? Well, it's not like these guys can handle it! They'd be easy pickings for those pirates! Doesn't that just drive you mad? Sure, it does. But if they can't fight back themselves, how would handing over one fighter hurt? It's not like you use it anyway. That's not a bad idea! But Mayor! I mean, it's a valuable fighter for sure, but it's still just one plane, right? If we try fighting, who knows what will happen to the town? You get a big nope from me! What's the big deal? I agree with Kylie. A single plane isn't worth risking the entire town. Don't go getting ahead of yourselves, girlies. We work for the Ouni Company now. Madam is the one who gets to make these decisions. If you want the Kotobuki Squadron to defend the town, I must ask that you speak to me, first. And the young ladies here will require contracts and compensation, of course. Stick to the plan. Chika and Kate along with Zara and I will pick them off from up here. Kylie and Emma, you two work with everyone on the ground! Roger that! All right! What's the deal with these guys? Perhaps it's the Kotobuki Squadron? Like we don't have enough enemies already. Take 'em out! Emme, it's time! You don't need to tell me! There they go! They're yours! Very well, then! Fire! Nice! It worked! We aren't finished yet. How dare you treat my lovely staff this way! Emma! A rear gunner?! Emma! Not on my watch! # -----------------------ED----------------------- The Raiden?! Don't you underestimate the Prince of Rahama! Pleasure doing business with ya! All right, retreat! Aye aye, sir! The contracts you signed with the town included a clause about protecting the Raiden. You do understand what this means, yes? Of course. Good. Now go on out there and get that fighter back! Fly forth, Kotobuki Squadron! Tomorrow is the day we have waited for! Now one pancake! Two pancakes! Three and four and five pancakes! We are the Kotobuki... Enough of your tone-deaf nonsense already! Nothing can stop a good song once it starts! Plus, squeezing you aboard has already thrown my fuel efficiency into a nosedive. Stop complaining! A nosedive? I don't weigh that much, you know! You weigh how many pounds, again? It's not by choice. Unlike you, I merely have a more full figure, is all. Don't forget, this is all because you went and got shot down yourself! Our wings are rays of light! Sto— Kylie! Settle down, Kylie! My flaps were feeling a little stuck so I'm just trying to shake them loose! That's not fair, Kylie! Reona, my right flap feels off, too! My rudder seems rather tight. What's your problem, cargo? Well... How long till we reach the Roota Airfield? Huh, I dunno. Why? N-no reason. Just... Well, pardon me, girls, but Emma here needs to visit the ladies room! Can she hold it just a bit longer? We should make it in another ten minutes. I think she's good! Roota is a great big place. A really lovely airfield. You sure know a lot. Have you been out to Roota before? Way back when the Squadron was just me and Reona. It was always so lively. And always stocked up with plenty of vending machines. Any with curry udon?! There should be. And burgers? You bet. What about pancakes? Of course! Yippee! Curry udon! Nooo! Why did this happen to me... How could this be? I wondered what you might be screaming about. This is unforgivable! Unforgivable! Unforgivable! First they shoot up Rahama, and now my pancakes?! These were two different groups, though. Plus, I figured we could all eat together here... So I went ahead and packed enough for everyone. This is so good! The best! True bliss. We were supposed to be performing for a company dinner! You never said it was for a company of air pirates! Please! I'll pay you extra, come on, I'm begging you! No way! Absolutely not! What am I gonna do! These are air pirates we're dealing with, I can't just go back on our deal now... We can't put on a performance with numbers like these! There you are! We're here! We're here to assault the base, stir up commotion, and make it easier for Zara to work from the inside. Getting as close as we can without being spotted is key. This all rests on how well we can work our way through this valley. Roger! I need to fix my makeup. C'mon! Here goes! We're under attack! I've got the right side! I'll take the left. Boss, it's the Kotobuki Squadron! Dangit! It's time to send 'em home crying! Suit up! Where are you, Zara? Well, that won't do. You little...! My apologies, sir. But due to personal circumstances, I'm resigning from my position at this miserable company as of today. What?! Do you think this is a joke?! Was that friendly fire?! They're friends no more. Zara! Sorry I'm late. What's the situation? It's a mess! Whose side are we supposed to take? The Raiden?! Well, there goes everything. Welcome back. Glad I made it. I wish we could just do runs between Rahama and Areshima forever! Or even just move to Areshima for good! It's quite an orderly, well regulated place. It's beauty is in its righteousness. Is it, now? Tell me though, Chika. Surely you don't plan on keeping that in our quarters, yes? Absolutely not. It's unreasonably bulky. But it's so fluffy! Look at this fluff! It's an anomalocaris. In ancient times, it thrived in the oceans, vast expanses of water rich in salt and other minerals. Cool! Oceans, huh? How could you not know that? Well, oceans haven't existed for a long time now, after all. Chika's subconscious might have driven her to seek something ocean-related without her realizing it. Bingo! Kate, you sure know your stuff! And just how much did that cost you? 498 pounds and 98 sen! Wha..?! Oh let her be. We all use our earnings in different ways. Be it to buy stuffed animals, to drown in some good drink, or simply stuff our faces. And speaking of that, where's Kylie? Delish! A flavor unlike the pancakes of either Rahama or the Haroromo... Heya dimwit! I'm certain I told you all of us needed to submit flying applications to the Areshima airway authorities. We never used to have to. That's so totalitarian. The law is the law, and you cannot just go ignoring it and doing whatever you want. I had a feeling it wouldn't fly. But once I saw the word "pancakes", I just lost control! I'm sure you know how it can be, right? No. You ever get so caught up in something that you lose sight of everything else? No. Or just set off headstrong down the wrong path? No! That's right. Reona would never ever get caught up in something and rush on ahead without thinking, now would you? Would you?! No! At any rate, you need to let someone know before you go running off like that. Yeah, yeah! Lame excuse for a fighter pilot! What's the deal with that hideous doll? It's an anomalocaris! The subconscious of all ocean life! Sounds like gibberish. One down! What's your deal, you doofus?! Hey! Stop it! Get back here! Stop! Oh my, a passenger vehicle? A modified Tudor Model AA. To think we'd see a non-cargo automobile. Areshima sure is full of surprises. Oh my goodness! Are you all right? Are you hurt? How are you feeling? Uhh... Oh thank goodness you're okay. I'm so relieved, and super sorry! Think of this as an apology. That's a chump change! But I'll take it! How did you do that?! A little gift for you! Sir, we must be going. Yeah, yeah, just a minute. From now on, make sure you look right, left, down, and right again! Got it? Okay! Wonderful! You have my gratitude! And that anomalocaris! I dig it. Don't run off like that! Don't shout like that! Quit causing such a ruckus! Quit causing trouble for the rest of us! Can't you just be quiet for a change... Somebody! Do something about this bird! That "bird" is Captain Dodo. I don't care! My goodness. Just where were you Kotoboofy Squadron girls off wandering? What can we do for you, Councilor Julia? Take a seat. You're making it look like I'm just picking on you. Two days from now I have a god-awful sort of meeting here. You can get the details from my chief of security. What sort of "meeting" might this be? And who is it with? I hope you understand, I must know the details to... I'll be meeting with the head of View Trading, Isao. A man dubbed likely to be the next head of Ikesuka. "Isao"? Never heard of him! He has plans to deal with the air pirate and energy problem. Insisting on using the capital and connections of major corporations, making himself a hero to the public. But I can't stand him. What's the plan? The problem will be with how we coordinate with the security units. Reona, are you seriously thinking of doing this? No thanks! I'm in! I wanna see some action this time! We don't even have any intel on these pirates. Isn't this a tad rush? I already have plans that day. Plans I cannot change. So that's one "yes" and two "no". And counting me that's two of us with some reservations. No, we should take this. We need it. Why? Defending Rahama cost us lots in repairs and maintenance. We need to make up for that. Well... Why?! I thought we were supposed to be treated equal here! I'm not blaming you. I'm simply saying we should do this. This is tyranny! We're supposed to talk these things out! Stupid Reona! Leave my lil' Malo alone! Stop it! Change of schedule. Tomorrow I'll wake up at 0700. I'll spend fifteen minutes on breakfast instead of thirty five. And I'll no longer spend an hour and forty five minutes staring off into space. Is that true? It is, Master Isao. I've had it. Doburoku Pirates, Shirokuma Pirates, Elite Industries, they costed me a lot of money. It's enraging, especially with that Kotobuki Squadron. And also that Ouni Company and Councilor Julia. I apologize, sir. Seems like we can't rely solely on outsiders. Someone has to place them under direct command. Someone who's intelligent, handsome and decisive. Someone who's got the whole world in his hands. Someone who's also straightforward and pragmatic, and never has any accidents. For example, someone like me. I can't put it any better myself. So, about those morons who can't take in the wonderful and smart idea here... We'll wipe them out completely. However, I could spare their lives if they're willing to lick my boots. Or help me get some work done. They may even get some money as rewards. Speaking of work... It's unfortunate we let that Yufang technician escape. What's the matter, you scared? It's so incredible! It's really something, Ol' Sab! This is what Ijitsu looks like, huh! Yup. But this isn't everything. I know all about how you people. It's the same here as it was in Yufang. Tossing someone away once they're no use to you. We'd never do that. As long as you're willing to help, we'll repay with our gratitude. Ol' Sa—! You've never thought about going back? I'll be around again. What a cute little girl. Your daughter? Never seen her. Yes, he has! I'm Kylie! Quiet! Go on home. And never come back here again. If we had that man under control, your plan could have been shorten by five years. And he dared go against me. What a stupid and stubborn old man. I can't understand at him at all. Ol' Sab! That's not fair! Don't leave without me! I still haven't seen anything yet! You really found it. Out in Areshima? Do you want to travel to Yufang, Allen? Of course, I'd like to see it for myself. But more than that, I want to know why they showed up here and then just vanished. Let me make one thing clear... I'm not researching them simply because I have a taste for Yufang alcohol! I know. It looks like I was right to leave you in Reona's hands. You smile a lot more than you used to. How's the Kotobuki Squadron? Having fun? I'm not sure. Have you ever seen Kate smile before? Nope. And I've never seen her get mad or cry or anything either. I'll come by again. Say hi to Reona for me. Tell her she should bring a nice bottle and visit me sometime. I guess he sorta looks like Kate... But he's so talkative, and he drinks, too. I do, yes. Are you in the Kotobuki Squadron, too? Uhh... well... Y-yes. You probably have to look after Kate plenty. How is she? Does she get along with everyone? I mean, she's a total weirdo sometimes, but yeah. Hey, hey, how did you know we were out here? Guess it's just my old pilot senses kicking in. Always need to stay aware of your surroundings, right? I'm pretty sure Kate realized you were out here, too. Yes. I did. Allen told me he met Reona back when he was a pilot. What did he used to fly? When is he gonna get better? It's most likely he never will. Huh? Kate? Kate, what are you always reading about? Mathematics, chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics... And as of late, electromagnetism. What about stories? Or novels or something? Fiction is pointless. The author is free to write whatever they wish. There's nothing to gain from such. You don't find them fun? "Fun"? Stories are like food for the soul! That's what my brother Chito used to say! I'll lend you "See the Sea" sometime, 'kay? It's a real treat! What a dreary, awful smelling place. I'm sick of these sort of joints. But that's where its charm lies. Is it not? That's a Standon Oil plane. What are big shot capitalists like them doing way the hell out here? Shouldn't you be worried more about evacuation... And just let the little town burn? We should take this. Now Kate, mind explaining to me why? If we were to lose our access to Nanko's gas, we'd be forced to deal with other oil fields. Not as cheap and close. That will leave us with no choice but to purchase from affordable companies like Standon. But Standon's gas is poor in quality. And they're likely to monopolize the industry and spike up their prices. The whole place is up in flames, huh... Hmm? Madam's never wrong, is she? Looks like company's coming out to greet us. What are they flying? Shokis, maybe? It might be the same group that hit the airfield. If they're flying Type 2s, we can handle them. Those aren't Type 2s, they're Type 4s! They're flying Hayates? What kinda air pirates have Hayates? They're basically the same as Type 2s, just with more power and better turning! Why do they get to fly such fast planes? That's not fair! Are these really even pirates? Oh, come on, why do we have to deal with this sort of stuff on today of all days? I can't even fight back! Kate, we're gonna dodge 'em! Roger. Kylie, if things look bad, drop that bomb and make an emergency landing! No way! We're putting out that fire! Kylie, approach our target from our eight o'clock. Then veer off at two o'clock. Okay! Pull up to two thousand. Here we go! Kate, what are you doing?! Lighting the fuse. It's an IED, after all. I've calculated the timing. Kylie, drop it when we're 200 meters out. Can't we drop it a little earlier? Denied. I can feel my butt puckering already! 800 meters. 600 meters. Ready... Go. Kylie, good work. Fire's extinguished. Withdraw at once. There's no point in continuing this further. And that's what it feels like to be alive! Nothing but a cold beer tastes quite like life itself! It says here, "The sea is whispering..." But the sea isn't a living being. It doesn't mean it literally was, it's just a metaphor! Stories like these don't just explain everything like that. You're supposed to build the world for yourself as you read it! Build it...? That's what my brother Chito always said! Is that "See the Sea"? Wasn't there some drunkard just like Allen in the story? A person who loved his drink so much he tried to keep all the liquor to himself. Well, more of a crab than a person. All to himself...? Down under the sea there were these springs of alcohol, see? And this one crab who lived by one just wanted to drink even more and more. Oh my, sounds like the drink is what drunk him! And so he thought up a plan. If he plugged up all the other springs, he figured more would shoot up from his. Speaking of things that seem off... Well, in the end, he just ends up running his own spring dry, and no longer gets to drink. I bet those black Hayates wanna keep all the liquor to themselves, too! You think they're traveling the world, plugging up wherever it comes from so they can control it all? That'd be some grand sort of plan. Hey, I think Kate's smiling! No way! I see. I'm totally not seeing it. Multiple bogeys spotted on our eleven. First Officer! He's still in the restroom. Are you sure these aircraft aren't just flying by? They're moving straight at us, so that's unlikely. With the First Officer still away, we await your orders now, Madam. All hands, prepare for battle! We're up against huge numbers. They sure didn't keep us waiting! Here they come! Look at all of 'em! We're looking at what, fifteen or so? Two and a half targets for each of us. We have a reading on possible bogeys pulling in fast from the rear. Incoming report from the rear watch. Confirmed sight of enemy craft approaching, It appears they hugged the ground and flew in under our radar. Kotobuki Squadron, fall back immediately! New targets closing in! This is a message to the mayor of Ikesuka. We have taken control of the Rahama airship Hagoromo and are en route to Ikesuka now. We demand the following from Isao and and the city of Ikesuka. First, that Isao resigns as mayor. Second, that the Brotherhood of Freedom Union is abolished immediately. On refusal of either of these conditions, we'll crash the Hagoromo into Ikesuka, setting off a massive explosion. I've got eyes. And we're still in line? Indeed. We should be right in the radar blind spot Addie told me of. I'm off! Be careful. Are those...? Explosives. What are we gonna do? Can you defuse those? Not a chance. Let's find Johnny. Why? You need a drink? No... Oh my! I'm so sorry. Johnny! I can't believe I shot someone! What else for do you keep that thing back there? It's just a lucky charm! With aim like that it's no wonder you used to be known as the fastest shot around. Johnny the Untouchable! Don't call me that! I promised Miki I'd never take up arms again! In a sad turn of events, the Hagoromo has been hijacked. And they're indeed headed for Ikesuka now. Are we going to be okay? Definitely not! But turning misfortunes like these upside down is what we of the Brotherhood are here for! We've been preparing for just this sorta event! To all my beloved Hogoromo crew. My apologies for the current situation. But the time to sit patient is now over. Here it comes, what's the code word? The captain takes flight at daybreak. Nice one, Loulou! Freeze! Yes! As you wish! I did it... Don't you run! I'm gonna tear you down and beat you back into shape! Leave them to us! It's no good! They've cut off access to the gas reserves! We'll do what we must to fulfill our mission. If that means we have to go down too... It's time you accept defeat. And it looks like we do! Get off me! What kind of brute uses real bullets on an airship? Is there any way we can land this thing? None whatsoever. The backup system is out, too. Betti, what's our estimated location? We're about 30 kilometers south of Ikesuka. Johnny, what about explosives? Unfortunately, this isn't looking easy. My apologies! How long will it take? Roughly... An hour? Can't we turn off the engines manually? Engine room doors have been welded shut, and it'll take time to get through them! So, we're on a non-stop, out of control flight to Ikesuka with a load of bombs on board? Reona, this is Loulou. Reona, here. This is an order. Shoot down the Hagoromo. Now, I don't want you tearing it apart and sending it falling. What I need you to do is make sure we lose just enough helium to make a soft landing. But that's ridiculous! Also, you're packed with explosives, right? Have you handled those? No. But then...! I need you to pull this off. Roger that, Madam! All right! Just one more. Get ready! Got it! We did it! Good grief, that's disappointing. What's with that sleepy face? I'm just so bored. Everyone else sure seemed busy. They sure love to work, huh? And here we were with a whole month off. I'd think almost anyone would jump at the chance for work with a twenty percent raise. Not you? I'd go if I could just fly wherever I want however I want. That's your dream job? I always thought you loved the work you do. I don't hate it! It's how I get to fly. I'll clean that up if you aren't gonna finish it. What?! Please don't! Thought so. You want me to tell you a story? Well, when you put me on the spot like that... The brave Kotobuki Squadron put on a fantastic show. Their popularity has since skyrocketed, and the phones have rung off the hook to get 'em booked! That's a boring story. Then... How about how the Ouni Company has temporarily called off all operations? All crew are free to take on side jobs, and they'll still get their normal salaries, too! First Officer, you're the most boring person ever. I get that a lot. Do you want to hear what I have for you today, or what I have for you tomorrow? I wanna hear whichever is better. Well, that all depends on you. It sounds like a great chance. Do you seriously think so? I'd at least be a little tempted. You're awful. I mean, flying is flying, right? We all need money, too. Can you at least quit drinking while we're up here? Why? 'Cause I said so! Oh, fine then. Sorry. It's not like I've got time to waste with you out here. I'm super busy with all my can-kicking and soul searching. Say Thunderbolt, do you remember when the hole closed up? Quit calling me that. It was seventy years ago. Nope! There's reason to believe it has opened and closed again since then. Yeah, right! Did you see it? You didn't, did you? I guess not. Because I was shot down by some unidentified planes, just before I found the proof I needed. And I've been stuck in a wheelchair, never making it up above 60 centikhrill since. Sure, these were probably smaller holes. Nothing of the scale of the one that brought the Yufang here. But if they did in fact open... Then what? Someone may have made their way here and done whatever it is they came to do. What do you mean? Or maybe they did nothing at all. That's a big difference! Wait... What... is that? Uh, hello? Is that... the hole? No, it's not open now. It's probably just going to disappear. Is there a chance it might open? That's incredi... Who-what-why?! Maybe I was a little too focused on my calculations and observations. You think?! Uh-oh. Are those Shiden-kai? Those aren't the sorts you want to face in this under-powered Type 95 Intermediate Trainer... Well, that's an understatement! It's been so long since I've been in a dogfight! This is so exciting! Are you crazy? It's not even a "fight" if we don't have any means of fighting back! Just like you wouldn't call an army chasing down an unarmed civilian a war! True! I've got a little favor to ask. What? See, I've got much better aim with a little drink in me. Whaddya say? If you're lying, you're really in for it. I'd never! Tell me Thunderbolt, what sort of flaws do you think those birds have? Uhh... they're too heavy? There's that. But even more than that, they're just too fast. Plus, they aren't built for turns. They have to take these big, long arcs. This 95 might be slow, under-armed and paper thin, but we can use that all to our advantage. They're coming straight at us! Thunderbolt, point us down. They're in my blind spot! Can you roll right? Okay! What the hell?! What are we gonna do?! Steady now, steady. You think I'm going down? Not a chance! Not in your wildest dreams! Nice! Oh, that feels great! You're pretty good at playing dead, Thunderbolt! Not that I ever wanted to be! Don't let your pride get the better of you! Just shrug it off, shrug it off! I never would have… I've already talked with Kylie, but I want you to tell the others. What's your stance, Madam? I have none. I don't plan on meddling in your decision. Things will go as they go. It's pointless trying to force others to do as you wish. Not impossible, but "pointless"? Oh, yes. What would you consider as having a "point", then? The freedom to choose. I see. You sure do love getting shot down, dontcha? Probably more than shooting others down. Chika, watch your mouth! This was more of an accident than anything else. Yeah, ok? And you, show some more appreciation to Chika for coming out to save you! Thank you so very much, Chika. I am simply glad you are all right. Thank you, thank you, and thank you. Oh, nonsense. Oh, yeah! Madam! I'm not leaving the Squadron! IS that so? I don't wanna take orders from or have to listen to anyone but Reona. Plus, another hole might open up over Rahama soon! I don't wanna miss that! That's really another hole, then? That's not really how I imagined them. Is this what you meant when you said Isao wouldn't let Rahama be? In hindsight, it seems like he's been after nothing but securing these holes for himself the whole time. That's why he's been hunting down anyone trying to learn more about them. Excuse me, but would you mind taking a look at this? If you want to know why Shouto was bombed... It's because it was the most likely location for the hole to open over. But as it turns out, the hole opened up over Rahama. You mean he's gonna come bomb Rahama next, then?! Excuse me, if I may. I come as a messenger from the Brotherhood of Freedom Union. This is the final warning from Chairman Isao himself. He demands that Rahama joins the Brotherhood of Freedom Union. Fail to meet these terms, and we will be forced to bomb Rahama in twenty-hour hours time. Truly, truly! A most unfortunate situation. Don't pretend you don't plan on leveling this place to the ground like you did to Shouto either way! You brute! What ever do you mean, Miss Turncoat? Chairman Isao is a most honorable man and issued his warning a full twenty-four hours in advance. Not a single life was lost. That's it! He just wants the city emptied! So he can have the hole all to himself. His demands are simple. I hope you will speak for all of Rahama now, and not be tempted by the words of this criminal here. What'll it be? I just can't! What I'm trying to say is that, well, Rahama is... not going to submit to your demands! Get lost! Get lost! Get lost! Get lost! Get lost! Well, that is most unfortunate. Perhaps today was just not a good day? Not that you'll have any better days now. Nice work! Mayor! You sure showed 'em! Nicely done! I want to knock out their numbers before they make it to Rahama. The only problem is our firepower and ability to reload. That's where my secret weapons come in! It's freezing up here. But it's so quiet, too. And the sky's so blue. I wish Ol' Sab was here to see this. I wonder if he's already seen it, though. This is it! Got a hit! But that thing's still flying! Feel like it's getting even bigger. It's holding its form, too. I wonder how big it is now. Prioritize the ammunition! Don't worry about fuel, fill up what you can. Slackers get a thirty-seven millimeter shoved right up their rear! Roger! By all means! Hurry up! Shoot! Kept you waiting, huh? Take that! Enemy bombers only thirteen kilokhrill away! Don't let them drop those bombs on Rahama! All vigilantes focus on those escort fighters! Leave the bombers to the Kotobuki Squadron! Only four kilokhrill until they reach Rahama! Aim for the base of their main wings! Follow my lead! Hey, hey! Why don't we just blow up those bombs of theirs? That's unrealistic. Is it? Those bombs are well armored. And piercing that plating won't be enough to set them off! We did it! Finally got one down. Only two to go! They're just two kilokhrill out! We don't have enough time... Don't give up! We're too late! Damn! It's gone... I've figured it out lately. What is it? I really hate those nasty fools who can't be reasoned with and won't ever give up! Now, it's finally my showtime. I've waited long enough. My good people, I am forever grateful that you have assembled before me here this day. Why, you may ask? Because you have chosen to gracefully share in our peace and happiness! But let us not forget! This world is full of miscreants who would seek to stop us! The hole is what once brought us the Yufang! It brought us prosperity! It brought airplanes, anti-air artillery, Yufang liquor, curry and rice, and even pancakes! But our enemies now wish to take its blessings for themselves! These heinous criminals spare no thought for anyone but themselves! These criminals are the people of Rahama! They tried to keep our long awaited new hole all to themselves, but failed! And just like that it was gone once again. We of the Brotherhood of Freedom Union will not forgive any who side with Rahama or Porokka! We must not allow these criminals to keep to themselves, stealing away the wonders of the holes from us! The Brotherhood of Freedom Union is the only path to world peace! Because only the Brotherhood has the power to make it a reality! The Brotherhood of Freedom Union is the best! He goes around preaching of brotherhood this and freedom that, but it's all just fancy talk. All he's after is consolidating all power into his own hands! How can they not see that? That's what we're here for, isn't it? You'd better believe it! Damned if I'll ever let Isao tell me what to do! If he did take control, the world would be as good as finished. Ijitsu would be split into three classes. Isao, his followers, and... his slaves. This is the Ofukouyama squad. We've reached the target airspace. All right! We've got eyes on the Union air force! Come on! Don't be like that, captain! I'm Adolfo Yamada, of the Nazarin... Camilla, you know what our job is and what we're here to do, right? Don't you go chasing any of them down! Of course! A grudge is a grudge! Gotta stay calm, cool and collected! Gotta riddle them with holes! More importantly you gotta stay alive. Exactly. Now all fighters, prepare to engage! The Ofukouyama squad has moved to engage the enemy. Good! Good, good, good! They fell for it, then. Those idiots from Ikesuka and the Union just threw two hundred fighters at a decoy! That's gotta be nearly all their aircraft. Don't let your guard down yet. They might still have more firepower than we know. C'mon now Julia, that doesn't sound like you. Overthinking things will just make you a coward! We've got all the intel we need right here. Right, my faithful assistant? Oh yes. According to my sources, there is no reason to doubt any of this. Well there you have it! We're gonna wipe 'em all out! Now let's move out! What is it with men like that who think shouting their orders will make any difference? I bet he thinks the louder he shouts the more power he wields. What an ingrate. Now now, girls. Let's curb the slander, shall we? No, feel free. They're entirely right about Gaudreau. But everything comes in handy when used properly. And right now Porokka's military force is just what we need. You seem pretty confident about all this. Of course. We might be a rag tag assortment, but we have them beat in sheer numbers. This is anyone's battle. I prefer to stay away from gambling when I'm just as likely to lose as win. But if we pass up this opportunity, our chances of winning only go down from here. So this is really our only chance, then. Exactly! I sure hope Miki made it safely out of Porokka. I haven't heard word from her, and I'm so worried... Why would she get in touch with you? I'm sure you've guessed as much, but we don't have any time to waste. First we need to hit the factories producing those bombers! Right, and those would be where...? Oh, yeah. Right there. Our target is 25 kilometers southwest of central Ikesuka. The Fugaku construction assembly plant! Wind speed at 17 khrill, blowing in at 90 degrees. First Officer, your orders, sir! Move the bridge upwind! All engines, High Speed forward! Black twenty! Releasing the hatch! All fighters, prepare for takeoff! Hey, so I don't really get what's going on here. Isn't this kind of a cheap move? Well, we drew out their main forces so we can close in on their facilities, so you might say that. Diversion is perfectly acceptable military tactic. I hate these missions, though. It's such a pain when we can't just fly however we want! I know what you mean, but I think we'd best avoid being hasty and try and talk this out. I would have to disagree. Oh my, and why's that? Reona seems to be forgetting that there are some people you just can't reason with. The more trust you put in someone, the weaker you are when facing them. That may be, but her word is still good by me. Right or wrong. That's nonsensical. Where do you stand, Kate? Good or bad? Do it or don't? There are things I wish to clear up. What do you mean? This mission is my chance to clear up things I wish to make clear. What does that even mean? Kylie, quit lagging behind! Yeah, yeah! You're flying too low, too. Yeah, yeah... How can you be so lax? Kylie has seemed out of it for a while, huh? Know what? I bet she's just scared! Nope. I was just thinking about what we're actually supposed to be doing out here. At a time like this? We're defending the Hagoromo and attacking Ikesuka. Defending the Hagoromo I can understand, but why are we attacking Ikesuka, again? Kylie! Were you in some other realm of existence during our briefing or something? No, I was listening. But none of it really made sense to me. So... a hole almost opened over Rahama, right? Then Isao showed up? And then Julia formed some kind of alliance. I get all that. But then what? What are we doing here? Are wars supposed to just be fought on a whim like this? Is that what the Kotobuki Squadron stands for? Orders are orders. And things are already in motion. I figured this lot was just a bunch of rag tag pilots, but they're better than I thought! Don't forget! This is for Shouto! For the theater they leveled on First Avenue! For the bakery and the Takochu Park, too! Let them have it! Got ya... My lady! I, the world's dandiest man, am here by your side! Fear not! Whaddya think you're doing, eggplant for brains?! When I'm maneuvering behind an enemy fighter, you should be making sure they can't pull away! How am I supposed to know that? If you have to ask, then quit talking yourself up! You're just wasting your breath! My lady! Captain Naomi, on your five! What are you even doing here? If you're just gonna float around, then quit wasting gasoline! I was trying to warn you... If you can't even cover me, then you're good for nothing! Stay out of my line of sight, fish face! Sorry... Pummel that factory, and we'll really curb the Union's firepower! Those big planes from the other day aren't here, huh? The Fugaku? Yeah, those! Could it be that it was their whole fleet? That doesn't explain why this place seems deserted. You'd figure they'd leave behind at least enough people to defend the place. We're blowing this place up? Don't sweat the details. Light the place up! Where's our welcoming committee? There's no sight of 'em here. I bet they all ran away scared of us! Madam! Councilor Julia! It was a trap?! I count 200, no, wait... That's impossible! They don't have those sort of numbers! What happened to that perfect intel of yours?! Gaudreau, sir, it would seem despite all unlikelihood that you were wrong. I was what, now?! I believe it's about time I make a career change. The pleasure has been all mine! Are you telling me you were a double agent?! Well then, take care! Order a retreat. If we don't do so this instant, our fifty-fifty chance will quickly become much more of a gamble. We can't! Julia, it would seem we made light of Isao. We've lost. Full retreat! Turn us around! Turning now! Bearing 180! Alert the decoy squad! Roger! Gaudreau, it's Julia. The Hagoromo is retreating. You'd best as well... Retreat isn't even on the table for us! You'll be wiped out at this rate! It's talk like that that's gonna cost us this battle! We can still win! And so the tricksters have become the tricked. Do you have any other options or back up plans? Not really, no! But this is just too cruel... Why don't you call that ex-wife of yours? She might even worry about you, now. Even now, it's only a "might"? Come on! Go away! Thank you, Naomi! How do they expect us to retreat from all this?! Well, we can't just have you running off without paying for what you've done. This time it's our turn! I would appreciate it if you would stick around with us just a tad longer. Fine then. Those Type 5's aren't half bad, huh? I sure love these near death battles! You two bastards better keep up! Aren't we retreating? That one there's all yours! All my— What?! Engines 21 and 23 have been knocked out! Engine 12 has been knocked clean off! We can't go at 'em like this! Fires have broken out in hangers 1 and 2! You have to retreat! So much for your day of dominance, huh?! I never claimed such to begin with! Dammit! How am I supposed to face up to Chika if I can't even out her teachings to work here?! Stay alert, Tokiwagi! Stick to the plan, we need to focus on each them, one by one! You ain't gotta tell me! Rahama still has its secret weapon! And it's time you had a taste of it! Fires have broken out in block 13! We can't put these out! Keep at it! The enemy's falling back! All we gotta do is push through this, and we win! It went down! Oh, this is so exciting! Isao, sir, please fall back. There's no need for you to fly head-first into this conflict. How did that saying go again? That old Yufang one... Oh yeah! Both are fools alike so why not fight? Zara, will you fly with me? I'm with you. I assume that's you, Union Chairman Isao! I'm Reona, captain of the Ouni Company's Kotobuki Squadron from Rahama! When I was still a fresh pilot, you once saved my life. I just want to talk with you! Uhh, talk about what, exactly? I don't like talking about complicated stuff! There's no need to fight this battle. I'm sure neither of us wish to see the loss of any more lives! That's true. If you issue the order, our side will surely agree to a ceasefire. I'll do what I can to make sure of it! And then? Please allow us to retreat! Sure. I knew you were not the person everyone says you are! Just kidding! Reona! I told you I don't like getting all caught up in complicated stuff! How dare you do that to her! Well, lookie here, another new face! Hi there, newbie! I'm no newbie, I'm Kylie! We met in Areshima! We did? You know, I think I do remember that mark on your tail, there. But I don't remember you being a girl. Or young, either! It was just some old fool who got left behind when the Yufang disappeared from Ijitsu. A real stubborn guy. Indeed. A mulish man stuck in his old ways. We call them the Yufang here, but they call themselves the Japanese Army, you know! Yes, indeed. Not the Yufang, but the Japanese. Apparently that guy was some sorta "mill-ee-terry" engineer or something. But no matter how many times we talked, he'd never listen to what we told him. He even tried fleeing. Ol' Sab... Maybe he just didn't like to fight? Despised it, I'm sure. Who knows, though? Indeed, we have no way of knowing now. Nope! 'Cause he was such a pain that we shot him down! Stinks to be him, huh? Abandoned by the Yufang only to be shot down by me. Not a happy ending! I wonder what he's up to now? Probably rotting away somewhere out in the wastelands. You miserable stinkin' buttface! Lemme tell you about Ol' Sab! What? What's the matter? Ol' Sab! He hated people like you! We can shoot down one after another, but there's no end! Chika, on your two o'clock! Above you! They've just got far stronger engines on board! What are we gonna do? Chika, here they come! Get ready to evade! Gotcha! We got them! Chika! That was excellent! Yikes! People can see my underwear from down there! I'll be right down to pick you up. You just sit tight. Engines 2, 4 and 6 are down! Engines 1 and 7 at 30% output! This is bad. Real bad! Then why do you look so excited? I was just thinking how I feel so alive! I suppose you won't really "feel" it when we're dead. We'll need to abandon the ballast on the bow to realign! They really won't make this easy for us, will they? Mayor! Coming, coming! Enemy formation coming in on our nine! All right, all right! I can't handle them all with this thing, you know! I'm done for! Mind if we join you, then? In this big gamble, I mean big opportunity here?! Who's that? The CEO and big boss of Elite Industries, Torihei! Here they come, dear! Seriously though, what? Aw, here I was thinking maybe he'd taught you a thing or two, but I guess not, huh? That old man wasn't good for much, but he was great in the cockpit of his Zero there, at least. He flew it like a hawk! Buh-bye, now. Will we meet again? Nope, I doubt it! Carelessness is your worst enemy. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind... There's something I want to ask you. Are you the one who shot Allen down? I sure am. An aircraft's emblem is like stage makeup. It has to look nice, or others won't take us seriously. You got that? Roger! Yes ma'am! This might be our last performance. We've got to give it our best. We'll take what we can. Hagoromo has to be as light as possible. Ah, I really wish I could bring this with me. What's that? Did you draw it yourself? It has always kept me company at night. That's... It's cute, I'll give you that. But there's no way we could take it with us. I know that. All right, I'll leave the Hagoromo to you! Now, there's no need to worry! So, you're not praying to God, but instead to it. Kate, never would I imagine hearing something this unscientific coming from you. That's not right. It does work. It can ease your mind and let you calm yourself. Now that Hagoromo is in good hands... All that's left... That belongs to Kylie, huh? This is kinda troublesome. That's true. She's probably licking her wounds now. Wounds? Although she was shot down, she didn't suffer any injuries. It's her pride that got hurt. Here is Kylie's personal belongings. You left it on board. You don't have to take it for me. I don't need them anymore. Is that so? I'll help myself then. Now, that's a treasure! This one is quite rare. It's worth five pounds. Oh my, I could decorate my house with this thing. Don't touch them... Well, why did you collect all these trash? What do you need them for? Ah, I got this one from Maria. What about this? I bought it when I first visited Gador. And you made fun of Chika's doll... They're just trash anyway. "Trash" and "treasure" are kinda similar, huh? Only something precious can become treasures. Even if it's junk, if others' trash is precious to you, then it's a treasure. Kylie, is this sakura... What's with that sakura? Does it have anything to do with calling Kylie a sakura thief back then? Ah, you did call her that! What's up with that? It was about seven or eight years ago. Thief! Is this sakura from way back then? That's right. I was scolded at, and told not to pick any more sakura. You can't do that? There's this saying, "Only fools prune sakura trees, and only fools not prune plum trees". It was because they looked so pretty. I wanted to take a closer look. You looked the same age as me. But you're making deliveries by yourself. Why? I don't know how to say it. But if it's my work, I'll have to do it myself. You could at least find someone... That sounds like trouble. Trouble, huh? Absolutely not! I'll deal with my own matters! I won't let others decide for me! That unfounded confidence of Kylie left a huge impression on me. What do you call "unfounded"? So, that's the reason. I was wondering how you two knew each other despite being so different. A miraculous re-encounter, the continuation of fate. Emma had to bear with you, huh? After all, Kylie's a single-cell organism. What did you say?! Look, she got mad in an instant. Well, Kylie, it feels quite nice flying together as a squadron, right? I guess. But... I thought I could do better, and that's the part I'm upset about. You're quite good with it now. Seems like it suits me more than being a fighter pilot. Do you plan on coming back? Adolfo, don't force him. This is where I belong. Well, that's great to hear. A good pilot isn't someone who never got shot down... But someone who survives. I got that. But, just how many times do I have to repeat my mistakes? You're still alive. Our Kotobuki captain still lives. You're right. Reona! Zara! The meeting is about to start! Please come over here! And that's our plan. It'll be difficult. But if we work together, it's not impossible. Not impossible... There's no guarantee. The probability of success is… The key to our plan would be the one who steers Hagoromo. Being able to steer the airship at extreme speeds till it reaches the destination... And to come back alive... One would need to be decisive and to take the initiative. Well, since I'm the one who proposes it, I suppose I'd... Wait! I'm the First Officer. I'll carry my responsibilities till the very end! Are you serious? You're volunteering? Please don't act so surprised. What? You're going too? The reaction's completely different! The Nazarin pilots, the folks from Rahama and Elite, I like them all the same. This has to be what you'd call companionship or friendship. That's it. Is this what it feels like when we fly together? You're slow. All right, it's time to go. We'll finish it quick and come back. And grab some beer. I agree. Everyone gather up. Fly high, Kotobuki Squadron! Yes, ma'am! It's unfortunate that things had to work out this way. Is it? Loulou! There's one last thing I want to say to you! First Officer. Thank you for your service. I hope you will help us endure this to the end. Oh no, yeah, thanks... I'll be here! What are you looking at? It's those long pauses of his that make things so uncomfortable, yes? You think so? I see them as more of one of his strengths. You truly are a wicked woman. How rude. You do this all hands off then, and let your little minions dance around for you, don't you? I simply prefer to leave the dancing to the dancers. If I were as clever as you, perhaps Gador would have faced a different fate. Now now Julia, let's not go talking as if this is over already. True. We still have work to do. Whether this is a battle for new beginning or a new end... Well, whatever happens, happens! Don't you so much as flinch! We fight to the bitter end! I don't care if you're the last man standing, you fight! Naomi squadron, make your approach from your eight o'clock. Your target is Isao Tower. What? We're under attack? They don't even stand a chance. Why even bother? It seems they still foolishly believe in victory. I wish they wouldn't rush to their deaths like this. If they would just submit and obey, I would give them more work than they could ever hope for! I have given the evacuation orders from the civilians and secured their safety. Master Isao, hurry up and... Boy, I sure do wanna get out there and fight! Repairs will still take some time. Not much we can do about that, huh? Guess we just stall for time, then? Good grief. I'm normally much more suited for non-manual labor! Anti-air towers?! We didn't have those in Shouto. Ikesuka sure is something else! Air combat sure is fun, huh! Can't beat the rush you get shooting down another pane. Getting shot down sure does stink, though. Why do people even bother fighting a fight they know they can't win? Are they stupid, or just obsessed? Isao's forces don't seem to have spotted the Kotobuki Squadron yet. Kylie and Chika, move in from the Sugar Crystal District. Emma and Kate, push right through the Snuggy-wuggy Swamp. Zara and I will head straight for Isao Tower. Reona, what do you say the two of us just run away. Why not just leave all of this behind and live out a new life somewhere far away? Somewhere you can do whatever it is you really want to do. That's out of the question. We have a duty here. We have no such thing. There's not a single thing out here we have any obligation to do. So why don't you share some of that burden you carry with me, sometimes? I wanna stay with you. Zara... Take a look at that! The sky's all weird! It's a hole. What? Already?! That's a little sooner than I expected, and a bit off course. I figured it'd be at least a short ways out. But it's right above them. Which means? Isao has definitely noticed. We have a report from the Shouto Squadron. An additional thirty enemy aircraft spotted taking off. Assume these fighters are headed out for the Kotobuki Squadron. Busted, huh? Just how badly do they want this thing for themselves? Less than five minutes until contact. We don't stand a chance against numbers like that. Girls, I don't suppose any of you have any suggestions? Two heads are better than one. What do you mean? It means if we all think together, we might come up with a better plan. Well, six heads must be way better than one, so get ready for the best plan of all! How about we focus on low, narrow spaces? So we take the fight straight into the city? Our Hayabusas' strength is in their handling. They're perfect for evading those anti-air towers, too. It's time we show these fiends that speed isn't everything. All right, then we take the fight into the city! The city, huh... Yup, and we show them everything we're made of. Got it! Zara. Yeah? You think things will be okay without me pulling all the strings? Of course! Why would we even be a team at all if any of us could do this all on our own? Thanks. Okay girls, are you ready? Yee-up! Of course. Absolutely! I'm ready! Let's do this! All right! Fly high, Kotobuki Squadron! Yes, ma'am! Flying straight down New Brotherhood Avenue here is the shortest route to the tower. All blocked off, is it? I suppose we might have guessed. We can still turn and head straight up Trust Boulevard. We move on our three, then! Kate! This is Kate. The rockets on that unidentified craft appear to be equipped with a proximity fuse. Stay alert. What should we do? You can't just evade, you need to circumvent them with sweeping turns. Big ones! Big ones? Huge ones! Proximity fuse rockets don't need to land hits because they detonate in proximity of their targets. But how can they tell when they're close? Via radar. This is going to be a problem. We need to split up! Emma, you follow Reona and I. As you wish. This is Kate. I've been downed on Hope Boulevard. Copy that. We're on our way to get you as we speak. Would she even shed a tear if I died? To think the day would come when I would need to take up arms again. I've heard that line more than once before. Oh no, but this truly was an unexpected turn! Let's just hope it's the last. Though it may be the last in more ways than one... Loulou... What the heck! Don't just barge in like that! I'm going, I'm going! No! Don't look! People like you who incite the innocent and seek to steal away what little we have for yourselves... Don't deserve to fly! Isao and the air pirates are pretty much one in the same, huh? I refuse to believe your twisted lies of peace, happiness and prosperity! It went off— —on that part sticking out there! Let's get rid of this jerk! Okay! Here we go! Yup! Did we get him? I think so! We're real aces! Chika! They got me! Chika, are you all right?! I'm good! I'll wait for pickup here, you keep going! Gah! We only had one of those lost little fighters there! When that one came through, a hole had barely even opened. Don't think I don't know you're here to block off that hole! I'd say you're definitely better off with me around. I'm doing just fine right now without you. I don't mean now, I'm talking about our future! Do you seriously think you're gonna make it through this? I was born to defend you. You're not making a damn bit of sense! I'm proposing, okay? PROPOSING! I'm asking you to marry me! Are you daydreaming over there or something, buddy? How about you tell me about those dreams of yours once we survive all this? Kylie, get below the bridge! Oh, right! I'll see you... IN HELL! I've been bested... But I certainly feel better now! It's time we settled our score! You don't have what it takes. Don't you dare think you can even touch her! Hatokichi! It's time, dear! We only have two birds left! What kind of monsters are you?! They just shot one of their own down! Don't worry, I'm on your side! Now, my brother! Roger that! Got 'em! Brother! They got me! I can see that! Air pirates? What are they doing fighting on Ikesuka's side? Don't tell me... Now then, my friends, it's time to repay those debts! Show Ikesuka and myself your thanks for all the aid we have always smuggled your way! Hey! Make sure you shoot some down for me, too! Impressive. But you are not quite as shrewd as I am. Ready the crane! You're the worst! Anna, look! The hole... It's time. Farewell. Your time's just about up! Master Isao. To our snack-time o'clock! What is it? It's an airship, stay alert! No ordinary airship moves at speeds like that. There it goes! You better make this worth it! Good luck. Closing up a hole that big will take more than four tons of explosives. With that much, it should blow in an instant. So that's it then? If they can't have it to themselves, they aren't going to let anyone have it?! What a stupid, dimwitted, idiotic idea! I don't think so! You shot down Ol' Sab, you attacked Rahama, and you still haven't had enough, you pighead?! You're not getting away with this! Can you just leave me alone already? As kind as I may be, you don't wanna make me angry! Kylie, you can't! You're gonna sink into the deep, dark sea at this rate! Remember "See the Sea"! Anger and hatred only harden you like stone, and once a stone sinks it never floats back up! You don't fly a plane... This is amazing, Ol' Sab! Wait, what? What did you just say? You don't fly a plane, they fly on their own. All a pilot needs to do is follow its lead. They fly... On their own! Okay! Time to finish you off! If anger and hatred are what hold me down... Then it's freedom that gives me wings! Nobody, and none of this sky, belongs to you! That's mine! It's mine, all mine, and just for me! It's going to be mine! Mine to dominate! Mine to manage! Mine to control! MINE! It's not for anyone but me! Gooo!!! Hey you! Don't you dare just turn and run! Do you have any idea how much time and money we spent on you, you traitors?! Was this really the right thing to do? Right how? Blowing up the hole like that. It might have brought us all sorts of stuff. And it might not have. You're right, Ol' Sab. I'm just gonna keep being me. I did this all by my own hands, of my own free will, after all! Kylie, are you there?! Come in! Come in already! I'm starving. You idiot! I can't think of a more Kylie response than that! Are you making fun of me? After all the hard work I just did? Only real idiots go around telling people they worked hard! Oh shut up, I only said it 'cause it's not like anyone else was gonna. Fine, oh yeah, you were sooo amazing. Now, put some more feeling into it! I can hardly hold back these tears of joy for how you rid me of those bastards that plagued me so. What's with the poetry? You should have rolled a bit wider, huh? I miscalculated. I think I'll kick off my studies of these holes again when we get back. I'll help you. Maybe I'll just try and give her a call. Even though Madam couldn't even sort things out? It might work better hearing it straight from me! Feel free, then. Doesn't this all feel pretty refreshing? We're free to do whatever we want now, is what I mean. Same as it's always been. And same as it always will be, huh? All right! I think it's time! Time for what? For me to step out of this Raiden and pass it on to the next generation. So I get to pilot the Raiden now! In what world would that ever happen? I'll make sure the First Ave theater, the bakery, Takochu Park, and the cafeteria are all rebuilt! Now then, where to go next! Atazaki is a great place for a honeymoon. Atazaki it is, then. Well, are we going to Atazaki or not? Do you take him for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, for dumb, for dumber? Isn't he just gonna stick around anyway? Of course I am, my lovely! I'm gonna buy myself a new handbag! And I'm gonna buy some shiny, fancy sandals! When we get back, it's straight to repairs and tuning! As long as we've got the parts, there's nothing we can't fix up. You best be ready! Roger! As you wish! The sheer number of problems we'll have to deal with now is just dreadful. Though maybe this will finally shake some sense into those fools in Gador. Everyone's ready and waiting for your return. We're headed for Rahama now ourselves. Fly safe, everyone. We'll see you in Rahama! Oh, right! What? Does the name "Kotobuki" come from the Yufang word? Yeah, it means good fortune. I heard it was more like a word of congratulations. And for longevity. Sounds like it means all sorts of great things. Sounds like a perfect match for us. I wonder if we'll still be flying when we're all old. We sure will! Long ago, the world opened right up, and lots rained down on us. Some good things. Some bad things. Some lovely things.\NSome tarnished things. There was all sorts of stuff. But now the world has closed up again. And while we slowly lose many things, we gain many more as well. And we live on, latching on to what we have. We'll live on.
