CR Whoa! An anime adaptation? Wow! It's all finally happening for you, Suzu. Good for you. Thank you. This'll be your fourth year as a manga artist, right? Yeah. Even my parents are happy for me, and they'd been worried up until now. Some friends of mine threw a party for me, but now, I think it's all caused me some writer's block. Why do you say that? It's like I need some sort of oppressive force in order to perform. Now that everyone's celebrating me, it's like I've lost the drive. Yes, you're one of those types. I can understand how you feel. You must be somewhat of the rebellious type. Well, don't put it that way. You'll make me feel embarrassed. And I never would have guessed you two know each other. We work under the same editor, and we're both originally from Mie. I mean, I've been seeking refuge here in Yamanashi for quite a while now. Seeking refuge? And I never knew you two knew each other as well. Yeah, we met at Houbunsha that time I had a meeting there. -Boop, boop, boop, boop… -I'm getting a strange sense of déjà vu. Boop, boop, boop… Suzuko Isuzu is the author of Why My Dad Died. In it, upon the passing of his father, the main character leaves Tokyo for his hometown in the countryside in order to take over the family farm. At first, he is uninterested but he comes to appreciate and even love the rural life through raising crops. However, he soon learns that one particular plot on his father's land is haunted by a malevolent spirit and is the reason why his father died. The land is cursed, and he cannot escape. While, yes, it is a horror story, it also digs deep into the farming life… -…and I found it a very interesting-- -Ms. Kurokuma. While I do appreciate it, please refrain from your compliments. That's right. Forgive me. You know, I did think about that. How you're able to write such scary stories. -And you're good with gore too. -No, no. I don't touch gore, or anything graphic for that matter. I do. Quite often. I've done… where… did… while also… Oh, we lost her. Sorry, I'm back. And there's something I've been wanting to ask you, Ms. Kurokuma. How busy do you get when you're getting an anime adaptation? Let's see. In addition to my regular meetings and gathering resources, I also have more manuscript work due to new manga volumes being released as the anime is being broadcast. Yeah, that sounds really busy. There's also the voice recording that needs to be done. Yes, I'm looking forward to that. Though I'm not looking forward to how long it's going to take to get from Ise to Tokyo. Hey, Ms. Aki. What's wrong? I'm just fangirling at sitting in on a conversation between two people who have anime adaptations. And you should also watch out for taxes. -Taxes? -Yes. You'll probably see increased sales of your standalone books, which will lead to greater royalties. You should pay close attention to all your expenses and deductions when you do your tax return, or else you'll get hit hard when tax time comes around. That's even more horrific than a horror manga. What was the biggest thing you struggled with when going through an anime adaptation, Ms. Kurokuma? Let's see. If anything, it would be the misfortune I brought upon those involved in the anime's production. -Misfortune? -Misfortune? I often base my manga on real haunted locations that should never be visited under any circumstance, and I often feature magical items that get used in real life. Because my manga is based on these things, those producing the anime very often fall victim to various misfortunes and strange occurrences. I do regular rituals and wards to help protect those involved in the production of the anime, so that none of the above actually occurs. But for my first anime adaptation, I let my guard down amid all the merriment. Yay! What's with the extremely niche host club? So, what befell everyone? Firstly, the animation studio's five-story building collapsed due to soil subsidence, and it is now only a four-story building. That's so outlandish right from the start! There were fortunately no injuries, but when the director went home that night, he found his apartment building too had succumbed to sinkage. The scriptwriter also had seven car accidents over seven consecutive days. Seven consecutive accidents? He had six minor traffic accidents from Monday through Saturday and then on the Sunday, a boar slammed into his car. -A boar? -A boar? The scriptwriter wasn't hurt in any of them, but by the end of it all, his car looked like it had been through a stunt course. Strange happenings occurred during recording as well. Takashi… They heard voices coming from the empty recording booth. Definitely spooky. Dinner's ready… Come down… The sound director, Takashi Nishikawa, burst into tears at the thought of his late mother, -who had passed away three years prior. -Mom! Well, that's a bit more uplifting. And finally… The lead actor, a very popular voice actor, went missing. I heard of that. And he's still missing, isn't he? How did he go missing? I think he was on his way home from recording one day when he fell down the stairs at the train station. He hit his head and lost all his memories, so he was hospitalized. Then one day, he just vanished. Actually, they found him not too long ago working as a tuna fisherman in Oma. Really? Every one of these incidents occurred within just two months of the anime production. I then took measures and managed to stop any further misfortune from happening. But if the anime had been broadcast as planned, the curse could have gone through the radio waves, and the viewers could have ended up as victims too. Whatever did you do? I gave one of these to everyone involved. -A plasma air purifier? -A plasma air purifier? Anyone who works in a temple or a shrine knows that plasma works on spirits. -Seriously? -Seriously? It stopped any more hauntings for those who were involved in the anime production, but in turn, it turned the spirits' anger toward me. I lost my entire manuscript to it. Wow, that's terrible. Spirits are good at working their way into IT and electrical appliances. Don't say it like you're some sort of electrician. Were you all right with it being gone? The editorial department had a copy of the old manuscript saved, so all I lost were the few pages I was working on at the time. Well, that's good considering the circumstances. I then purchased a new computer and had it cleansed at a reputable IT shrine. Things have been fine ever since. I know that place. They have a shrine dedicated to the God of Lightning, and it's where people in IT go for good luck. You don't say. This is my new PC, by the way. Have you made it into a household shrine? Still, seeing as you're a horror manga artist, Ms. Isuzu, you might do well to get yourself a plasma air purifier in advance. Okay. And I'd also better find the motivation for getting my manga ready for an anime adaptation. We're rooting for you, Suzu! Ms. Aki! I finally found the perfect motivation! You did? I signed on to one of those anonymous forums and started hurling hate toward myself alongside all my haters. It's gotten me all fired up now! Now I feel ready to take on the next 72 hours cranking out my next manuscript! Suzu! I really think you should find another method! I see. So your first ever screenplay meeting will be in Tokyo this Friday. Yeah, it's why I got a bit carried away. Sorry about that. I know what. Hey, Ms. Akino. Thanks for inviting me out. It's good to get out every now and then, right? Ms. Kurokuma! Sorry to keep you waiting. Not at all. I, too, only just got here. Ms. Shimada's coming today too, isn't she? She is. She should be waiting for us just outside the station. Isn't that her? Looks like she's already eaten. Rules for the Minobu Donburi Walk. Participants will go around eating mini "donburi" rice dishes throughout the Minobu area, collecting digital stamps at the eateries that offer these meals as they go. Once all six stamps have been collected, participants will head for the summit of Mount Minobu, where the final goal awaits. Hold on. Ms. Shimada's just about done with them all already. Never mind that. I've brought my work phone and my personal phone along with me. You think that's what we were worried about? -Let's eat. -Let's eat. You don't often see Western cuisine on donburi dishes. -Delicious! -Delicious! Well, that was quick. They really are mini servings. About the same size as a pudding from the convenience store. I've never heard of these ingredients. What kind of meat is this? It's an old, regional dish of cormorant meat and wild vegetables. Due to the reading of the characters, many mistook it for a generic "soba-udon" noodle dish, and it had been lost to time. Cormorant meat? That's how the story goes. It seems they've recreated this dish from the tall tale. What they've actually used is just chicken. What an elaborate backstory. It's sweet-spicy and delicious. The sesame sauce goes really well with the horse meat. I like this one too. By the way, Ms. Isuzu, I hear you had your first screenplay meeting yesterday. Yes. Though it was only the type of meeting where I had to sit there with my arms folded for the entire six hours. What do you mean? I was surrounded by professionals. The meeting was just a deep dive into my manga, and I didn't get many opportunities to speak up. So much so that I feel like if I sent a stuffed toy of myself as a stand-in for next time, nobody would even mind. Well, it was only the first of many meetings. You really should speak up when you feel the need, Ms. Isuzu. If you hold back, you'll only kick yourself later, wishing you'd said something when you had the chance. No, it's just that everyone else beat me to it. After that, I just had nothing to add. Ms. Kurokuma, I did end up giving a plasma air purifier to the production studio as well. Nice work, Ms. Isuzu. So, you got one. Hey, I've been meaning to ask you, Ms. Kurokuma, at what point did you realize you needed an assistant? I believe it was a little while after my first anime adaptation had been broadcast. I now leave the majority of the drawing work to them. I see. Thank you for waiting. Ms. Shimada! You're getting the tonkatsu set as well? Well, you guys just keep talking after you've finished your mini donburi dishes. These miniature servings really are too minimalistic. They really are. So, Ms. Kurokuma, how much does it cost to hire an assistant per month? Maybe 2,000 yen? 2,000 yen? But that's way too cheap! How can your assistant make a normal living? Once I summon them, they stick around for about one month. So that's fine, right? It took a lot of trial and error, and a fair amount of expenses before I made my first successful summoning, but now I'm able to summon multiple at once. I think we're at cross-purposes here. Kill me… Kill me… The aged roast pork is soft, and the yellow onions and stir-fried mushrooms are so aromatic. Then the mellow mayonnaise just brings it all together. So good! Who'd have thought there'd be such a nice little restaurant here inside the park? Not me. And also… …the regular-sized roast pork don is on quite the shallow plate. Can you really call it a donburi dish like that? Tastes just as good as it looks. What do you suppose is the seasoning in this small plate? That? That's sansho pepper. The cubed pork belly is toasted, and it has just a touch of sesame and sansho pepper for a delicate accent. Once you're done with the main part, you can add the soup to enjoy a different sort of flavor. I wish I'd ordered the regular size. That's not something someone who's had nine mini donburi and a thick-cut tonkatsu set should be saying. Hey, what's wrong, Ms. Kurokuma? -Ms. Kurokuma! -Ms. Kurokuma! I'm sorry you had to witness that. My body has never handled sansho pepper very well. I take it you're not a spicy fan. Ms. Shimada, sansho pepper actually has warding properties against spirits. Oh? So now, in accordance with my physical condition, all of my assistants must have all but disappeared by now. I'm afraid I fear for this month's deadline. What are you even talking about? Looks like there's lots of ingredients out there that are good at warding off things, other than sansho pepper. Oh, yeah? Oh, they're so basic that I almost forgot. There's rice and salt too. This is just the right size for a donburi dish. Yeah. It'd be perfect for gyudon or katsudon. No, Ms. Akino! Not that! Anything but that! Hmm… Now that we've done all that walking, I'm starting to get a bit hungry again. What? Shall we make a pit stop at the cafeteria up at the observation deck? They've got a delicious tofu skin curry you can try. Fine. Whatever you want. My belly is satisfied at trying all the different types of donburi dishes today. The last bit was tiring, but through it all, it was quite fun. Now that we're getting into the early evening, let's take the ropeway back down-- Why are you frozen in some sort of sumo pose? Are you all right, ma'am? I'll be okay if I don't move too much… I'll take it slow on the way down, all right? Thank you… I'll go with Ms. Shimada to the hospital at the base once we make it down. Okay, thank you. Take care, Ms. Shimada. Please… Make sure you look after your backs, you two. Ah… It's shaking… Guess you can throw out your back even when you do regular exercise. Yeah.

washed Whoa! An anime adaptation?! Wow! You've finally gotten one too, Suzu! Good for you! Thank you. This'll be your fourth year as a manga artist, right? Yeah. Even my parents are happy for me, and they'd been worried up until now. Some friends of mine threw a party for me, but I think it's given me writer's block. Why do you say that? It's like I need some sort of oppressive force in order to perform. Now that everyone's celebrating me, it's like I've lost the drive. Oh, so you're one of those types. I can kind of understand that feeling. You must be somewhat of the rebellious type. Well, don't put it that way. You'll make me feel embarrassed. Anyway, I never would have guessed you two know each other. We work under the same editor, and we're both originally from Mie. I mean, I've been seeking refuge here in Yamanashi for quite a while now. Seeking refuge? And I never knew you two knew each other as well. Yeah, we met when I was on my way to a meeting at Houbunsha. Boop, boop, boop, boop... I'm getting a strange sense of déjà vu. Boop, boop, boop... Suzuko Isuzu is the author of Why My Father Died. In it, upon the passing of his father, the main character leaves Tokyo for his hometown in the countryside in order to take over the family farm. At first, he is uninterested, but he comes to appreciate and even love the rural life through raising crops. However, he soon learns that one particular plot is haunted, and is also somehow related to his father's death. The land is cursed, and he cannot escape. While, yes, it is a horror story, it also digs deep into the farming life, and I found it a very interesting— Ms. Kurokuma! While I do appreciate it, please refrain from your compliments. That's right. Forgive me. I've thought so for a while, but it really is amazing how you're able to write such scary stories. And you're good with gore too. No, no. I don't touch gore, or anything graphic for that matter. I do. Quite often. I've done—where—did—while also— Oh, we lost her. Sorry, I'm back. And there's something I've been wanting to ask you, Ms. Kurokuma. Does it get busy when you receive an anime adaptation? Let's see. In addition to regular meetings and gathering resources, expect to take on more manuscript work in order to release new volumes as the anime is airing. Sounds like things really do get hectic. There's also post-recording to be done. Yes, I'm looking forward to that! Though I'm not looking forward to how long it'll take to get from Ise to Tokyo. Hey, Ms. Aki. What's wrong? Nothing, just appreciating this conversation between two creators with anime adaptations. And you should also watch out for taxes. Taxes? Yes. You'll probably see increased sales of your standalone books, which will lead to greater royalties. You should pay close attention to all your expenses and deductions when you do your tax return, or else you'll get hit hard when tax time comes around. That feels more like horror than an actual horror manga. What was the biggest thing you struggled with when going through an anime adaptation, Ms. Kurokuma? Let's see. If anything, it would be the misfortune I brought upon those involved in the anime's production. M-Misfortune? I often base my manga on real haunted spots that should never be visited, and feature magical items that get used in real life. Because of that, the people involved with the anime were at increased risk of experiencing misfortune and strange occurrences. Normally, I would've regularly performed rituals to prevent those occurrences, and it was my responsibility to protect those involved with the anime. But I was caught up in celebrating my first adaptation, and it completely slipped my mind. Yay! What's with the extremely niche host club? S-So, what kind of misfortune did they encounter? First, the animation studio's five-story building sunk due to soil subsidence, and it became a four-story building. An outlandish one right from the start! There were fortunately no injuries, but when the director went home that night, he found his apartment building had also sunk. The scriptwriter also had seven car accidents over seven consecutive days. Seven consecutive accidents? He had six minor traffic accidents from Monday through Saturday and then on the Sunday, a boar slammed into his car. A boar?! The scriptwriter wasn't hurt in any of them, but by the end of it all, his car looked like it had been through a stunt course. Strange happenings occurred during recording as well. Takashi... They heard voices coming from the empty recording booth. Yikes, definitely spooky. Dinner's ready... Come down... The sound director, Takashi Nishikawa, burst into tears at the thought of his late mother, who had passed away three years prior. Mom! Well, that's a bit more uplifting. And finally... The lead actor, a very popular voice actor, went missing. I heard of that incident. And he's still missing, isn't he? How did he go missing? On his way home from recording, he fell down the stairs at the train station. But if the anime had been broadcast as planned, the viewers could have been cursed through the radio waves. Whatever did you do? I gave one of these to everyone involved. A plasma air purifier?! Anyone who works in a temple or a shrine knows that plasma works on spirits. Seriously? It stopped any more hauntings for those who were involved in the anime production, but in turn, it turned the spirits' anger toward me. I lost my entire manuscript to it. Wow, that's terrible. Spirits are good at working their way into IT and electrical appliances. Don't say it as if they're electricians. W-Were you all right with it being gone? The editorial department had a copy of the old manuscript saved, so all I lost were the few pages I was working on at the time. Well, it sucks that happened, but all's well that ends well. O-Okay. Ms. Akino, thank you for inviting me out. It's good to get out every now and then, right? Ms. Kurokuma! Sorry to keep you waiting. Not at all. I only just got here as well. Ms. Shimada's coming today too, isn't she? She is. She should be waiting for us just outside the station. Isn't that her? She's walking out like she's just finished a hearty meal. Rules for the Minobu Donburi Walk. Participants will go around eating donburi dishes throughout the Minobu area, collecting digital stamps at the eateries that offer these meals as they go. Once all six stamps have been collected, participants will head for the summit of Mt. Minobu, where the final goal awaits! Hold on. Ms. Shimada's just about done with them all already. Never mind that. I've brought my work phone and my personal phone along with me. You think that's what we were worried about? Let's eat. You don't often see Western cuisine on donburi dishes! Delicious! Well, that was quick. They really are mini servings. About the same size as a pudding from the convenience store. I've never heard of these ingredients. What kind of meat is this? It's an old, regional dish of cormorant meat and wild vegetables. Due to the reading of the characters, many mistook it for a generic "soba-udon" dish, and it had been lost to time. Yes. Though all I did was sit there with my arms folded for the entire six hours. Isuzu. So you got one. How can your assistant make a normal living?! Once I summon them, they stick around for about one month. So it's perfectly fine. It took a lot of trial and error, and a fair amount of expenses before I made my first successful summoning, but now I'm able to summon multiple at once. I think we're at cross-purposes here. Kill me... Kill me... The aged roast pork is soft, and the yellow onions and stir-fried mushrooms are so aromatic. Then the mellow mayonnaise just brings it all together. So good! Who'd have thought there'd be such a nice little restaurant here inside the park? Not me. And also... the regular-sized roast pork don is on quite the shallow plate. Kurokuma? Ms. Wh-What are you even talking about? Looks like there's lots of ingredients out there that are good at warding off things besides sansho pepper. Oh, yeah? Oh, they're so basic that I almost forgot. There's rice and salt too. With so many warding ingredients, it seems like just remembering to avoid them would be harder. You're also meant to fast beforehand if you decide to visit a haunted location. Sounds like a lot of prep work. You can never go wrong with curry! Never! When you think about it, curry has a lot of spices with warding properties in them, so it must be the ultimate spiritual protection. It is also said that cats and dogs have the ability to ward off evil spirits. That's a long-held belief, isn't it? There are times I wonder myself whether cats and dogs can actually see ghosts. My dog sometimes stares at nothing, and sometimes even growls. Speaking of cats, Taishou hasn't come home in a while. I actually attached a GPS to his collar recently as well. I think he's trying to summon something. How about a manga story about a protag who defeats evil spirits by hurling curry at them? That might be fresh? You mean a comedy or a horror? Hurling curry does sound pretty funny, but you could be on to something with exorcising demons with various spices. Using spices... Exorcising demons... Go! Guess it depends on how you present it. You think so? That's the sixth and final one. I'm feeling full now. I'm full too. I may have overdone it a bit. Now we just need to make it to the goal at Mt. Minobu. Sorry, everyone. There's just one more stop I'd like to make. Now this is what I'm talking about! The natto is made from the special Minobu soybeans produced at the temple. I wanted to make sure I got a good taste of the local produce. If you could curse an enemy with any type of curse, what sort of curse would you pick? And we're back onto unsettling topics to pass the time. I may hate the person, but a killing curse is probably taking it a bit too far. Yeah, agreed. I would hate dealing with the consequences. You're very compassionate. So you would pick something that works well for a short while, but that leaves no lingering aftereffects. How about a curse that throws out someone's back? A bad back? Your face tells me you're underestimating the pain of a bad back, Ms. Isuzu. For far too long I have grown weary of the trivial representations in creative writing of throwing out your back! Did we hit a nerve or something? Yeah, I pulled a back muscle the other day. Fake! This is how it really is. Help me. You can't stand or walk, and even rolling over in bed is torturous! It hurts. If it happened to you on top of a mountain, you'd be done for! Not even youth can save you if you don't get enough exercise. You all must take great care not to let it happen! It feels like you're speaking from experience. Have you thrown your back before, Ms. Shimada? Yes, and ever since, I've been mindful of it by exercising and scaling mountains. A curse that throws people's backs out... I think that might work. There's meant to be one more checkpoint before we reach the goal, right? This must be the checkpoint. But this is in the opposite direction from the ropeway. Hey, look at this. It's a sign saying we need to climb up the mountain without using the ropeway! "The final checkpoint is en route to the summit. We wish you luck on the last spurt of the Minobu Donburi Walk." Well, that's a curveball in the final stretch! Whoa! We made it! W-We made it... It took a whole three hours... The "Walk" part of the "Donburi Walk" bows to no one. I'm gonna throw up... Well done, everyone. Here is your reward. This is a pretty well-made donburi bowl. Yeah. It's the perfect size for gyudon or katsudon. No, Ms. Akino! Not that! Anything but that! Hmm... Now that we've done all that walking, I'm starting to get a bit hungry again. What? Shall we make a pit stop at the cafeteria up on the observation deck? They've got a delicious tofu skin curry you can try! Fine. Whatever you want. My belly is satisfied at trying all the different types of donburi dishes today. The last bit was tiring, but through it all, it was quite fun. Now that it's evening, let's take the ropeway back down— Why are you frozen in some sort of sumo pose? Are you all right, ma'am? I-I'll be okay if I don't move too much... I'll take it slow on the way down, all right? Thank you... I'll go with Ms. Shimada to the hospital at the base once we make it down. Okay, thank you. Take care, Ms. Shimada. Please make sure to look after your backs, you two. Ah... It's shaking... Guess you can throw your back out even when you exercise regularly. Yeah.
