Important note for players with at least 32MB of ram and a Voodoo2 or AGP graphic card.
This version of Battlezone contains special enhanced textures for high end systems. If your system contains at least 32MB of ram and a high end graphic card you may be able to turn on the enhanced textures. Before you can turn on the enhanced textures, download the "large assets" file from the Battlezone web page at http://www.activision.com. To turn on the enhanced textures follow the directions below:
Open the folder where Battlezone is installed.
Look for a file called render.cfg, this is a settings file that controls the graphics in Battlezone. If you have patched to version 1.31, then this file may be called render.txt. You will first need to rename this file render.cfg.
Double click on this file and select notepad or wordpad to edit it. You can also open it in any other text editor.
Look for a line that reads “;LargeAssets=1 // Use ENHANCED large textures“
Delete the semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line. This activates this line of the configuration file. Close and save this file and you can now play battlezone with the enhanced textures.
These enhancements have only been tested on Voodoo 2 and AGP video cards. They may work on other cards with at least 8MB of memory, but this is not guaranteed.

When a full shutdown of the system is not necessary, Windows 98 does have the support of switching to a Standby or Suspend mode to save power. However, Battlezone was not intended to be left running when users place their system on Standby or Suspend, and it is not recommended. If your system automatically switches to a Suspend mode when you do not use it, click on Start \ Settings menu and bring up the Control Panels. Double click on the Power Management control panel and change the time listed in System Standby to "Never". Click on OK.
Correction to manual, p. 78, which states that a CD is required for each user in a multiplayer game: This is true for all strategy games and all Internet games, but for IPX Deathmatch games, only the Host in a game needs a Battlezone CD in their CD drive.
Before you begin playing Battlezone, it is recommended you also set your system power switch so that it shuts down your system when pressed instead of placing it into Standby. To do this, click on your Start \ Settings menu and bring up the Control Panel. Double click on the Power Management control panel to bring it up. When you click on the Advanced tab, one of the options available should be setting your system power switch from Standby to Shutdown. If it is not already on Shutdown, change your setting to that and click on OK.
Correction to manual , p. 86, which lists which vehicles can be Commandeered. The following vehicles can also be sniped and commandeered: Light tank and Bomber.
If you do accidentally place the system into suspend, Battlezone may not respond when you bring the system back up. To close Battlezone, press control-alt-delete once and when the Close Program windows appears, choose Battlezone and click on the button End Task.
