So w

This wheat's all

Why do you have a tray full of

Nah,

It's fine. Seems like

The ship will sink if everyone gets drunk at the same time.
We gotta have some sober folks to make sure the ship doesn't sink or something.
There's always gonna be a few who avoid drinking.
But luckily, not everyone is a fan of drinking, anyway.
I can't

Plus, I'm not really old enough to

or perhaps they discovered it by pure chance, while cursing their enemies.
It didn't take long for us to understand how the wicked weapon works.
Either way, it didn't take long before people discovered how to use the strange devices as weapons.

Just like bitterness, when you mix up layers of uselessness,

Kinro, what's that?
I dunno, man. It's, like, something Francois said earlier.

Ow!
Hey, Kinro! Behind you!
The Early Middle Ages.
Nope!
The northern seas were ruled by us,

In the Middle Ages, these brave warriors ruled the Northern Seas.

Displaying extremely
impressive
nautical

How
did
they

it
so long ago?
the
Vikings
arrived in the Americas
a full
500 years before Columbus
!
No
fair!
It really is incredible.
Why can
they
get around so easily?!
How
'd
they
do
it
way back then?
It's not
as though there are signs on the seas
!
Yeah! It's not
fair!
The sun is the only sign on the seas.
How were
they
able to
get around so easily?!
But the skies aren't always clear.
It's not
like the sea has signposts
!
The Vikings sure are strange.
The only signpost at sea is the sun itself.
That's why there's a legend that came about:
That's true, but what about when it's cloudy?
that the Vikings must have had a stone
that would reveal the position of the sun
Did they have some kind of trick they used?
under any condition
—
a sunstone
.
They did, and it's the stuff of legends!
In any case,
It was said that the Vikings had a tool
that would reveal the position of the sun
under any condition
.
it was
exceedingly hard
to determine your
head
ing and position
on the high
sea
s.
They called it
a sunstone
!
So it
's
exceedingly hard, and
we're supposed
ly
taking the
hardest route there
, aren't we?
You see, back then,
it was
incredibly difficult
to determine your
bear
ing and position
at
sea
.
It
's
easy now.
It
's
that tough, huh? And yet,
we're supposed

Thanks to the great marvel of science called GPS, we

It looks like us

Wow, look at that! What's the deal with
all these hourglasses

We use sundials and hourglasses to transmit the time in Japan

Using these, we can give the crew on the ship an accurate reading of what time it is here in Japan.

How are we supposed to talk to them?
Then how do we

Then how do we

We

We

the

what time it is

It's okay, Suika

CR What's up with this, Senku? This wheat's all soggy. And it's sprouted. And that's totally fine. And then we dry it over a fire. Even though you just soaked it? What are you even trying to do? Knead it well and get rid of the hulls. And then beat the heck out of it! And then mix it in hot water and filter. All done. Wheat juice. Toss in some of Japan's own hops, Humulus lupulus, and boil. And then we just let the mighty yeast do their thing. It'll ferment on its own and become alcohol. The yeast will even carbonate it for us. Beer is rather impressive, is it not? They even paid pyramid builders with beer back in ancient Egypt. It's perfect after heavy labor. You're right. It's fantastic! Aren't you having any, Senku? I'll pass. Nah, I'm not the only one. The ship will sink if everyone gets drunk at the same time. There's always gonna be a few who avoid drinking. I can't drink alcohol. Oh, yeah, that's right. All right, then. But so long as you're on my ship, when it's time to have fun, you're going to have fun. I won't allow a single exception! Francois! Understood. I shall mix a special soft drink cocktail for each of those who will not be imbibing. Isn't that a bit extreme? It's just a shipboard minibar! You can count on Francois to take it to the extreme. Let me know if you need anything. Yeah, the science team will take care of it! Thank you kindly. In that case, since you offered... Gum syrup? We're making it out of wheat. The stuff you get in the water when you wash wheat flour is starch. We'll add a dash of sulfuric acid as a secret ingredient. It's our friend Ryu-san again. Sulfuric acid?! In a drink?! How are you even supposed to drink that?! It'll melt your teeth if you drink it straight. That's why we're boiling it good. I knew it. We're going to use chemistry to detoxify it, right? You gotta slow down, Gen. And then we add barium carbonate. Even more poison?! I mean, it's just the name that makes it sound bad, right? Think about it. There's no way we'd be using legit poison. No, it's legit poison. Why?! Just shut up already. We've been making sugar and stuff with this. Mix it well, check the pH, and filter it, and it's harmless. That's how science works. Don't try this if you don't know what you're doing. You'll die. And now we have gum syrup. Sweet! Are you warming milk? It's not much hotter than bath water. Is that hot enough? That's the trick. It turned into yogurt stuff! Filtered yogurt, gum syrup, and lemon together make... Please enjoy. I-I've never had anything like this! It's super sweet and just a little bit sour. It's so good! I tried adding apple juice to a lactic drink. Apple flavor. Good idea. It even has a cucumber garnish. It's so cute with the Suika mask. It's not just a garnish. Try dropping it into the glass once you've finished about half of it. It changed into watermelon flavor! It's really refreshing! That's so strange. How did apple turn into watermelon? Ah, so that's what happens when you mix gourd family plants with fruit juice. Your pure smile, like the sunshine, reacts with your mask and offers a different charm. A cocktail for Suika-sama, the 2Side Sunshine. I've seen bartenders in movies throw drinks like that. There must be some scientific reason for how you mix drinks, right? You think so? None whatsoever. There isn't?! It's called flair. It serves the vital purpose of treating the guest's eyes in addition to their palates. Francois is a real master of the art of hospitality. A cocktail for Tsukasa-sama. The red of the pomegranate under the light of science, the black light, changes like the gentle flame inside Tsukasa-sama's heart. It changed blue! It's glowing... So pretty. Not bad. It's delicious. For Gen-sama, a grown-up kick under a simple exterior. Spicy grown-up cola! For you, Kohaku-sama. Humanity is a force to be reckoned with. All the drinks that can be made with just natural ingredients... Although, everything in this world is natural. And this cocktail is for Senku-sama. From the top, whipped matcha, milk, and hojicha syrup. The layering represents the way science builds on itself. I don't care, as long as it's a drink. You mind if I stir this now? I thought you might ask that. With your elegant mixing, the many efforts of science will mix into a mildly sweet latte. Come on, drink with us, Matsukaze. Tell 'em all those stories about your past. Your master, was it? Tell him how awesome I used to be. That wasn't you, Ginro. My master had a strong spirit until the very end. There was no warning. When it rained down... Perhaps it had someone's voice, or perhaps it finally heard our curses... It didn't take long for us to understand how the wicked weapon works. Should these land in the hands of bandits, the island will fall prey to crime! Find them all and destroy them! Master! Matsukaze... There's no saving me now. Master... Enough of that nonsense. I've been thinking... Why did the heavens spread the petrification weapon among the people? At first, I thought it was divine punishment. But it's strange... If the goal was to petrify everyone, it would have only taken one device. And why are they made to be so easy for us humans to use? It's almost as though they intended for us to use the devices against each other. That's what upsets me the most. I want the heavens to suffer for it, Matsukaze. I want them to see that we humans aren't that foolish. That they're underestimating us. My fate is inescapable. I must make sure future generations know of the source of this evil. I'm aware that the sin of failing to protect my master is not one that can be erased by defeating Why Man. Still, I... Beer with matcha. The bitterness of adulthood will, with time, elevate itself into a mellow flavor. Please enjoy. He's a lightweight! I... I must become stronger. Yes. Tsukasa-dono, I'd like to borrow your chest! Sure. Tsukasa-dono... Tsukasa-dono! Forgive me! I was intoxicated and stepped out of line. Actually... I was thinking you need some training, as well. Are we really waking him up, too? We have a gun with us now. Besides, Tsukasa's here. We can keep him under control. He's not stupid enough to get any weird ideas when the whole of humanity is on the line. You're the battle specialist. If you think you need him, it's your decision, Tsukasa. Fighting is my job, and he's the most qualified for training in that department. We need your help, Hyoga. With training in modern martial arts, Matsukaze will improve dramatically. I have just one condition. What's that? Do you want to be pardoned for offing Tsukasa and the rest? I don't need that. I would never be granted such a thing after the judicial institutions are revived. My condition is two revivals. Give me the right to revive two people. Hyoga-sama. What was it... Owari Kanryu-style spear techniques? Maybe I'll give this "practice" thing a try for the first time in my life. No, there's something else to do first. You're right, there is. There are some cute girls here. We need to get closer to them first. Moz-kun, I expect you to be proper. Kinro! Kinro! Man, I hate that stuff. How are you supposed to even go near them? It's so dangerous. So, er... Did you know, Kinro? Bitter defeats eventually become a mellow something-or-other. What are you talking about? Francois said something like that. I see. Kinro, what's that? I know not! Ow! The Early Middle Ages. The northern seas were ruled by us, the Vikings! With their impressive sailing skills, they arrived in the Americas 500 years before Columbus. Amazing, isn't it? How did they manage it so long ago? No fair! Why can they get around so easily?! It's not as though there are signs on the seas! The sun is the only sign on the seas. But the skies aren't always clear. The Vikings sure are strange. That's why there's a legend that came about: that the Vikings must have had a stone that would reveal the position of the sun under any condition—a sunstone. In any case, it was exceedingly hard to determine your heading and position on the high seas. So it's exceedingly hard, and we're supposedly taking the hardest route there, aren't we? It's easy now. Thanks to the great marvel of science called GPS, we know exactly where we are. About that... How are we using GPS in this stone world? We coordinate with Ruri and the others who stayed in Japan. What is this? Look at all these hourglasses! We use sundials and hourglasses to transmit the time in Japan as accurately as possible to the ship. Transmit?! It's really happening! Chrome's true feelings from far beyond the sea! What are you even talking about? We're stupidly far away. How are we supposed to talk to them? Then how do we... We can't talk, but we can just barely receive shortwave signals. So we have them send us time signals every hour. Like that. It's 10:00 AM over there. As long as we know what hour it is, I can count the seconds just fine. Oh, yeah. I forgot you're a human stopwatch, Senku-chan. I don't know how we can tell where we are from what time it is, though. Don't worry. The modern grown-ups don't quite get it, either. The sun's at its highest point right now. The ship's right at 12:00. From the time difference to Tokyo, we get our horizontal position. We gotta have some sober folks to make sure the ship doesn't sink or something. But luckily, not everyone is a fan of drinking, anyway. Plus, I'm not really old enough to drink alcohol. Yeah, guess you are a little young. Don't let it get you down. When it's time to have fun on my ship, I make sure everyone gets their fair share. No exceptions allowed, you hear me? Francois! Understood, sir. I shall mix a hand-crafted mocktail for each of those who will not be imbibing. Can you really do all that?! With that tiny, cobbled-together bar?! Expect nothing less from Francois! Let us know if you need anything. Whatever you want, the science team's on it! Thank you kindly. Since you're so generous as to offer... Gum syrup? Yep, we use wheat to make it. As you wash the wheat flour, a starch slurry collects in the basin below. The secret ingredient is a dash of sulfuric acid! Oh, how nice! Our old friend, Sulfurina! Wait, you're gonna put that in a drink?! That stuff is super poisonous! It'll melt your teeth if you drink it straight. That's why we're boiling the crap out of it. Oh, yeah. Of course Senku wouldn't use that without some sort of science-y trick to fix it up. You gotta learn to be patient, Gen. Then we dump in some toxic witherite. That's poison, too! It's probably just the name that sounds scary, right? I mean, come on. There's no way Senku'd be putting straight-up poison in our drinks. Nope, it's straight-up poison. But why?! Would you scaredy-cats just pipe down for a second? We've been making sugar and stuff with this for a while now. We mix it thoroughly, until the pH is in harmless territory. That's science, baby. But seriously, don't try this at home. You might die. And now, we've got ourselves some gum syrup! So freakin' sweet! Warming up a bottle of milk, huh? Doesn't seem like it's gotten much hotter than bath water, though. Yeah, that's kinda the whole point. You made yogurt, dude! Take some filtered yogurt, then add gum syrup and a bit of lemon, and voila. Please, enjoy. I-I've never had anything like this before in my life! It's super sweet, a little bit sour, and 100% yummy! I added some apple juice to the lactic drink. Apple, huh? Sounds delicious! I love the little cucumber on the rim. It looks like an even tinier, cuter version of your helmet, Suika! It's not just a decorative garnish. Now that you're about halfway done, drop it into the glass and give that a try. It tastes like watermelon now! It's super yummy and refreshing! That's so cool. How'd it go from apple to watermelon? Well, that's what happens when you mix gourd family plants with fruit juice. Your pure smile, like radiant sunshine, has a scientific reaction with your helmet, showcasing your effervescent charm. This is a cocktail made in the image of Mistress Suika: the Two-Sided Sunshine. When she's tossing around the shaker like that, she looks like a bartender straight out of a movie. I bet there's gotta be some scientific reason that it makes the drinks better, right? Would you, now? There's nothing of the sort. Are you serious?! It's simply for flair. It treats the guest's eyes in addition to their palates, for a more satisfying experience. Wow, talk about mastering the art of hospitality. This cocktail is for Master Tsukasa. Watch as the red of the pomegranate transforms under the scientific glow of the black light, just like the gentle flame smoldering inside Master Tsukasa's heart. Whoa! It turned blue! It's glowing! So pretty... Very nice. Thank you. And now, for Master Gen, an innocent look that hides a mature and spicy kick. Yep, that's some spicy cola, all right! And for you, Mistress Kohaku. Humanity truly is a force to be reckoned with. We have the ingenuity to create such amazing things from nothing but natural ingredients. Yeah, but you do realize that everything in our world is natural, right? And to the one and only Master Senku, I present this. A combination of whipped matcha, milk, and houjicha syrup. The layers represent science and the way that it constantly builds upon itself. Well, I'm gonna drink it all anyway, so is it okay if I stir it? I thought you might suggest that. With your elegant mixing, Master Senku, those layers of scientific achievement will combine to become an ever-so-slightly sweet latte. Come on, Matsukaze! Have a drink with us! We wanna hear all those cool stories from your past, 'bout your good ol' master. Tell this guy how awesome I was back then! That wasn't actually you, Ginro. My lord was strong of heart to the very end. On that day, there was no warning. It all happened so suddenly. Either way, it didn't take long before people discovered how to use the strange devices as weapons. Should these fall into the wrong hands, chaos will consume the island! Every last device must be located and destroyed! My lord! Matsukaze... I'm not long for this world. You mustn't say such things, Master. Listen, I've been thinking. Why would the heavens curse our people with these evil weapons? At first, I thought it was divine punishment. But don't you think it's strange? If their goal was to turn everyone to stone, it only would've taken one device to make it so. And why, for that matter, are the weapons so simple for us humans to use? It's almost as if they were designed for the express purpose of pitting us against each other. That's the part I can't stand, Matsukaze. I wanted so desperately to prove the heavens wrong. To show them that mankind is not fool enough to doom itself to eternal petrification! That we are not to be mocked! My fate is sealed. Therefore, I will ensure future generations know what wrought this calamity upon us. I'm well aware that I cannot erase the stain of my failure, nor the bitterness in my heart by defeating this Why-Man. But still, I must go on. Beer with matcha. The bitterness that comes with maturity will, someday, mellow into something more palatable. Please, enjoy. He's a lightweight! I failed him... I must make myself stronger. Yes. Lord Tsukasa, can I lean on you to support me? Sure. Oh, thank you, Lord Tsukasa! Forgive me! I was intoxicated and forgot my place! Pay it no mind. Actually, I think we could all benefit from some combat training. We're actually waking this guy up? I dunno... Relax, we've got a gun now. 'Sides, Tsukasa's here. We can keep him under control. It's not hyperbole to say the future of humanity's at stake. I don't think he'll try anything stupid. You're in charge of the fighting, Tsukasa. So, if you think you need him, I'm sure you're right. My specialty is hand-to-hand combat. For weapons training, he's undoubtedly the best instructor we've got. We need your help, Hyoga. If you can train him in modern fighting techniques, Matsukaze will improve exponentially. I agree, on one condition. Oh, yeah? Are you looking to get some kinda pardon for offing Tsukasa and whoever else? No, I won't ask for that. It would be an injustice, and no system of law would accept it, anyway. My condition is two revivals. The right to awaken two people of my choosing. Hyoga... Now, where were we? You were going to teach me this "Owari Kanryu" spear technique, no? Maybe I should give this practicing thing a try for once. Might be something to it. Actually, there's something else we must attend to first. Mhm. There certainly is. Got some good-looking girls here. I'd like to start by getting to know them a bit better. Now, Moz, I expect you to behave properly. Kinro! C'mere! Man, if you ask me, those guys are way too scary! No way I'm throwing myself into the middle of that mess! So, that's why I was thinking... Uh... Didja know, Kinro? Just like bitterness, when you mix up layers of uselessness, they turn into a smooth flavor of... something! What are you saying? I dunno, man. It's, like, something Francois said earlier. Is it, now? Hey, Kinro! Behind you! Nope! Got you no... ow! In the Middle Ages, these brave warriors ruled the Northern Seas. They were known as the Vikings! Displaying extremely impressive nautical skills, the Vikings arrived in the Americas a full 500 years before Columbus! It really is incredible. How'd they do it way back then? Yeah! It's not fair! How were they able to get around so easily?! It's not like the sea has signposts! The only signpost at sea is the sun itself. That's true, but what about when it's cloudy? Did they have some kind of trick they used? They did, and it's the stuff of legends! It was said that the Vikings had a tool that would reveal the position of the sun under any condition. They called it a sunstone! You see, back then, it was incredibly difficult to determine your bearing and position at sea. It's that tough, huh? And yet, we're supposed to be taking the most complicated route, aren't we? Don't worry, it's stupid easy now. Thanks to the great marvel of science called GPS, we always know exactly where we are. Right, about that... What exactly does GPS look like in this stone world? It looks like us coordinating with Ruri and the others back in Japan. Wow, look at that! What's the deal with all these hourglasses? Don't forget the sundial, too. Using these, we can give the crew on the ship an accurate reading of what time it is here in Japan. A message from Ruri?! It's finally happening! Expressing her feelings for Chrome from across the ocean! Still got no clue what you're talking about. Nah, we're way too far away to have a full-blown conversation. Then how do we get messages? Well, they might not be verbal, but we can receive faint shortwave signals. So they send one every hour, on the hour. There's one now. That means it's 10:00 AM back home. And once we know the hour, I can just start counting to keep it accurate down to the second. How could I forget we've got "Senku the Human Stopwatch" in our presence? I still don't really get how knowing what time it is helps us figure out where we are. It's okay, Suika. The modern grown-ups don't really understand how any of this stuff works, either. The sun's at its highest point right now. Which means it's 12 o'clock our time! The time difference gives us our latitude. And the height of the sun, our latitude. And what that tells me is that the Perseus is currently... right here! I don't get the technical stuff, but that last part makes sense. 'Cause if we know our longitude and latitude, we definitely know where we are! Traveling with science is amazing! As long as we can see the sun, we've got everything we need! Yup. As long as the nice weather keeps up, it's smooth sailing all the way to the States! You just had to say something, didn't you? I swear, sometimes it feels like before you were born, you decided to max out your stats in intelligence, grit, and willpower, and had nothing left over for luck. There's no way we'll be able to see the sun through all these thunderclouds and rain! I suppose we'll just have to rely on my captain's intuition for now. If this storm lasts for more than a few days, we could be looking at a major time loss. Without the sun to guide us, we'll just be sailing around in circles. If only we had something magical to help us, like the sunstone from that Viking legend. Check it out! We got this rock out of the skarn deposit— that treasure trove of naturally-formed materials. Mind using your gorilla power to chisel out this middle section for me? Are you thinking there's a beautiful gem hidden inside or something? As long as you send it to Ruri, I'm all for it! I dunno. It's kinda pretty, I guess? Just looks like a whitish rock to me. That's what I thought at first, too. But check it. See what happens when you look through the translucent part? Huh, it looks kinda weird. There're two of you! I guess it is a pretty cool rock... I'm not convinced Ruri would think too much of it, though. You're seriously still going on about that? Anything cool might turn out to have some totally badass uses someday. That's why I check out everything I can get my hands on! That's what it means to be a real scientist! Now, look! You can see the shape on the other side showing through twice on the stone, but offset a bit. Hmm, maybe the sun's a bit more this way? You won't be able to see it through the clouds, though, will you? Yeah, but that doesn't matter. Because when you get the angle just right and point this baby at the sun... See? It lined up! The two marks look almost exactly the same! Not that I know why or anything. Wait, so... Yep! Now we can see where the sun's at, even when it's cloudy! Oh, you found calcite! Calcite acts as a natural prism, splitting light into two. So when these line up, that's where the sun is? Yeah, that's pretty much the gist of it. I've heard of calcite before. Apparently, when investigating Viking shipwrecks, divers found calcite surprisingly often. It's always been a mystery as to why they were hauling the stuff around, though. Though we can't say for sure, it seems like it was more than mere magic or legend. They really did have sunstones. Correct you are! And now, over 4,000 years later, our crew is sailing across the ocean to the Americas, just as the Vikings of old did! With the constant, yet ever-changing power of science! Hey, what're we gonna use science for next?! Land! F-Finally! We're finally here, guys! We made it all the way to America!
