On the
ice,
On the
glimmering
ice,
it's hard for even the world's best athletes to land
even the world's greatest skaters struggle.
every move successfully.
No matter how many hours they spend perfecting their jumps,
There are so many elements to consider.
they can't land them every time.
But if you can
do tricks
But if you can
pull off moves that others never could—
that other skaters never could,
if you can grab everyone's attention with your grace—
if you can dance so beautifully and freely
if you can show the beauty and freedom of your skating—
that it makes people forget you're on the ice at all,
then you're the true champion of figure skating.
that's real magic.
To get a chance on that beautiful icy stage,
That's what it means to be a world-class figure skater.
we little dreamers dove in headfirst, not realizing the price we'd have to pay.
In order to reach that beautiful moment,
Pursuing our dreams...
little kids from all over jumped right in,
cost us everything.
too young to realize that achieving their dreams means
Oh, it's four o'clock already. No wonder there's so many kids around.
that they and their families will have to pay a great and terrible price.
Ow!
Four o'clock already.
You could at least apologize...
No wonder there are so many kids out on the ice.
She's
probably around
five.
At least say you're sorry.
If I had started
as
young
as her, who knows where I'd be
now.
..
She's
got to be about
five.
You're 14? And
a total beginner?
If I had started
when I w

that

J

I'd be in a way more successful position right
now.
I'm going home.
..
You're 14? And
you're
a total beginner?
I c

I heard
there was a skating job,
You can j

but
they
said they're busy today and
to

tomorrow
...
I'm going home.
Guess I
'll stay at an internet

C

they said
there was a skating job,
Why

and now
they
don't even want to talk?
Hey
there
!
What am I supposed
to
do? Just hang around until
tomorrow
?
Sorry to bother you
, but I'd like
to ask you a couple
questions.
Guess I
could go to a net

Did you come here alone today?
Huh?
Would you mind showing me your ticket?
Okay. What
's a kid

ing
behind the rental counter?
You did pay, right?
Hello
there
.
Get back here!
Sorry to bother you
.
I'm busting my ass working part-time to scrape together enough to practice,
I just want
to ask you a couple
of
questions.
and this little brat thinks she can skate for free? No way!
So, where are your parents?
Stop right t
here!
Let's take a look at your entry ticket, why don't we?
Wait,
hold up!
She
's—
Oh, dear. Did you pay?
Hey! Where are you going?
I have to have a whole ass job to pay for these entrance fees.
I don't care if she is a little kid, no one skates for free on my watch!
You get back
here!
- Please.
Wait,
sir. Let me explain. - What?
No way.
Dang it!
Come on.
She
can't have gotten that far yet.

Hey!
What

She can't have gotten very far.
Get down

I m

Please don't die.
Wh-

you

Stop

I'm fin

Get down
before—
Really, I'm not hurt or any--
Please don't die.
..
So
you're giving bags of worms to the old guy at the reception desk,
Hey, don't
cry
.
and because he lets you into the rink with that,
I'm fin
—
you're technically not skating for free
.
So
to get this straight,
you're technically not skating for free
Is that it? Because--
because in exchange for worms for his birds, the receptionist guy is letting you into the rink?
Please believe me. I'm telling you the truth!
I-I... I'm not lying!
He has lots of pet birds and so I dig them up.
I-It's true, I swear!
See? I've got them right here.
Look, I've got them here!
Whoa! Okay! I believe you, now put them away.
A-Alright, I get it! Just put them away, please!
I'd bet money he's just u
sing that as an excuse to
be nice to
her
.
Really, old man? U
sing that as an excuse to
let
her
in?
I'm
kind of
surprised
they managed to get away with it.
But
I'm
more
surprised
by the fact that
they managed to get away with it.
No one's caught on?
Hey,
um...
you're trembling
.
Hey,
uh,
you're trembling
pretty bad
.
Are you
okay?
Are you
feeling
okay?
I
hate snakes
and
things like 'em,
so please keep those
abominations
away from me
.
I
don't like wiggly stuff like worms
and
snakes,
Okay.
..
so please keep those
away from me
forever
.
Anyhow...
Okay.
You
running
away
means
you
knew
you
we
re doing
something
wrong
, right?
-
Anyhow...
- Huh?
You
have
to
stop doing
that.
You
did run
away
, which
means
that
you
must know what
you

wrong
.
If
others start

the s

You

Okay.

If

But my mom says I can't because
she doesn't want me to

But my mom says I can't because
I'll
get hurt.
So I thought if I just followed the book, I could learn by myself.
So I started practicing on my own, hoping that one day...
- Have you told her that? - Huh?
Have you told your mom that?
Did you tell your mom how badly you want to skate?
Here, take this.
It's a list of phone numbers for all the figure skating clubs in Nagoya.
Talk to your mom and have her reach out
to see which one might have the right program for you.
Which skating club do you coach at? I could just go to yours.
Huh? Wait. Who, me?
Yeah.
I'm not a coach. You wouldn't want me anyway.

If you're serious about going pro,
you're right at the cutoff age.
I'm not really a coach or anything like that...
I mean it. Talk to your mom first thing

It's already six?!
No more worm business, alright?

Ice dancing is a two-person sport,
Tsukasa.

You finally told your mom, didn't you?
Hmm?
For beginners, we usually
recommend this school
first.
Take a look. I
recommend this school
for beginners.
And if it's just once a week, the fees are quite affordable.
The lesson fees here are low if she's enrolled once a week.
But wouldn't it take her two years to graduate?
It would take a full two years for her to graduate though.
Oh, you're quite knowledgeable!
Oh, I see you've done your research.
Yes. My eldest
used to figure skate.
Well, I know because my eldest daughter
used to figure skate.
Is
that so?
Oh, is
that so?
Yes
.
Yes
, I
started
her
when she was
only
five.
She
started
when she was
five.
She had worked so hard.
A lot happened, and ultimately,
But she had an accident and had to quit.
it just brought her pain.
You see? I couldn't bear to put Inori through all that too.
That's why I'm determined not to let Inori face the same fate.
Besides, she's not doing very well in school.
Not to mention, her grades at school aren't great.
Her teachers have been worried about her grades for a long time already.
Even the teachers are concerned.
To add skating on top of all that would just
be too much.
Balancing skating with her studies would
be too much.
Then
why
are
you
--
Then
,
why
did
you
come?
She's been
so
insistent about it.
She's been

So I'm taking
her

clubs

I figured if I took

clubs
and had
the coaches tell her "no"
directly,
I figured if
the coaches tell her "no"
, then maybe she'll
finally
drop it.
she might
finally
give up.
Well, it'
s just a theory, but if she joins a club and starts private lessons
--
Th-This i
s just a theory, but if she joins a club and starts private lessons
—
What for?
It's pointless.
Her sister did this for years, so I know how
the figure skating world is
.
Since her sister used to figure skate,
There's no way she
'll be able to
catch up
.
I think I have a pretty good idea of what
the figure skating world is
like
.
Her peers will all have
started
at
five
or six and she'll be left behind.
There's no way she
can

for different things.
Look here.
Skating is all about
using
the two
edges of the
skate
blade
.
The
inside edge and
this is
the outside edge.
We have the
inside edge and
the outside edge.
The first step
to
skating
The first step
in
skating
is
learning
how
to
use
these two edges.
is
to distinguish
how
they're
use
d to propel you.
Start by positioning
your feet at
about
a 45-degree angle.
First, place
your feet at
a 45-degree angle.
Like this.
F
irmly bend your knees,
and bring
your arms
to shoulder height.
Then, f
irmly bend your knees,
stick
your arms
out.
Tilt
your ankle
inward
toward
your big toe
to engage
the inside edge
,
Now lean
your ankle
in
toward
s
your big toe
,
a
nd then push off the ice with the entire blade.
then you're on
the inside edge
.
At this point, it looks really cool if you raise your free leg—the one not on the ice.
A
nd then push off the ice with the entire blade.
But
don't push yourself at first.
Now eventually, you'll be able to raise your free leg.
His
legs
are so long...
That looks really cool.
As
you start moving,
straighten your supporting
leg
,
But that takes muscle, so
don't push yourself at first.
and bring your free leg in
.
Wow. Long
legs
.
When you
r free leg gets to the inside, tilt the supporting leg to the inside and push with it.
Once
you start moving,
stretch the gliding
leg
all the way up
Then bring it back under you and push off with the other leg.
and bring your free leg in
to meet it
.
Just keep repeating that.
When you
're steady on both legs,
So... I move my feet
like this...
you can lean your gliding leg to the inside edge this time
H-Huh?
I'm
barely
moving
forward
at all.
..
and push off again.
Leaning
forward
will cause you to
brake
. You need
to keep your head up.
Glide along until you're ready to bring that leg back in and repeat like so.
- Now you give it a try. - Uh, do my leg
like this...
Um,
I'm
not
moving
at all.
Am I doing this right?
Yeah, if you lean
forward
like that, that's what puts on the
brake
s.
Just try
to keep your head up.
Keep my head...
Keep my head...

Absolutely not.
I've made up my mind.
What?!
And I do not want my daughter to
figure skate.
I have no intention of letting her
figure skate.
- But you just-- - Inori's sister worked so hard.
But...
From the time she was five, she had absolutely no time to play or be a kid.
Watching my eldest, I realized something.
She gave everything to this sport.
She had to give up her childhood at the age of five to focus solely on skating.
And in the end...
Only to abandon it, never seeing the results she wanted.
And in the end, she had nothing to show for it.
Seeing her go through that was truly heartbreaking.
I just think Inori hasn't found a dream other than
skating yet.
Inori just hasn't found a dream outside of
skating yet.
I want her to experience other things she could enjoy.
I don't want her to pour time and money into something that I know won't pay off.
I don't want her time or money wasted.
Is that so wrong of me to think as her parent?
I'm trying to do what's best for my daughter.
She's not wrong.
She's got a point.
Starting figure skating at 11 would be incredibly hard.
It's going to be hard to start skating at 11.
As someone who started way later than everyone else,
I should know.
I should know.
I...
She could still find something with a lower barrier of entry.
I

"Damn it"?
Let's just get her ass in here already.
What are you saying?!
Beg your pardon?
Of course, there's no guarantee she'll
become an Olympic athlete
.
Watch your language!
However!
Here's the thing.
She has the one thing that is absolutely essential for skating.
I can't guarantee that she's going to
become an Olympic athlete
or anything.
A burning passion for the rink!
And yet, she already has everything she needs to be successful as a figure skater.
Skating demands a lot of time and money— far more than most other activities.
She has dedication for the rink.
And to succeed, the skater must have fierce determination
and an iron will.
And it's true.
But the other
kids all started at five—
Figure skating takes up way more time and money than other extracurriculars do.
Oh, give me a break!
So if you want to overcome that,
Kids that age can't seriously
practice a damn thing

your skater is going to need a lot of optimism

DSNP On the ice, it's hard for even the world's best athletes to land every move successfully. There are so many elements to consider. But if you can do tricks that other skaters never could, if you can dance so beautifully and freely that it makes people forget you're on the ice at all, that's real magic. That's what it means to be a world-class figure skater. In order to reach that beautiful moment, little kids from all over jumped right in, too young to realize that achieving their dreams means that they and their families will have to pay a great and terrible price. Four o'clock already. No wonder there are so many kids out on the ice. At least say you're sorry. She's got to be about five. If I had started when I was that young, I'd be in a way more successful position right now. You're 14? And you're a total beginner? You can just forget it. I'm going home. Came all the way from Yokohama because they said there was a skating job, and now they don't even want to talk? What am I supposed to do? Just hang around until tomorrow? Guess I could go to a net café. Huh? Okay. What's a kid doing behind the rental counter? Hello there. Sorry to bother you. I just want to ask you a couple of questions. So, where are your parents? Let's take a look at your entry ticket, why don't we? Oh, dear. Did you pay? Hey! Where are you going? I have to have a whole ass job to pay for these entrance fees. I don't care if she is a little kid, no one skates for free on my watch! You get back here! - Please. Wait, sir. Let me explain. - What? No way. Dang it! Come on. She can't have gotten that far yet. Huh? Must be hearing things. Huh? Huh? Hey! What do you think you're doing? Get down from there. Please don't die. Stop crying. I'm fine. Really, I'm not hurt or any-- So you're giving bags of worms to the old guy at the reception desk, and because he lets you into the rink with that, you're technically not skating for free. Is that it? Because-- Please believe me. I'm telling you the truth! He has lots of pet birds and so I dig them up. See? I've got them right here. Whoa! Okay! I believe you, now put them away. I'd bet money he's just using that as an excuse to be nice to her. I'm kind of surprised they managed to get away with it. No one's caught on? Hey, uh, you're trembling pretty bad. Are you feeling okay? I don't like wiggly stuff like worms and snakes, so please keep those away from me forever. Okay. - Anyhow... - Huh? You did run away, which means that you must know what you're doing is wrong. You really need to quit that. If everyone tried to pay with worms, the skating rink would go broke. - Okay. - At least she listens. Hmm? Hey. That book... Oh, yes! Talk about a blast from the past. I had this book too. These notes... Yeah. I really want to do figure skating. But my mom says I can't because she doesn't want me to get hurt. So I thought if I just followed the book, I could learn by myself. - Have you told her that? - Huh? Did you tell your mom how badly you want to skate? Here, take this. It's a list of phone numbers for all the figure skating clubs in Nagoya. Talk to your mom and have her reach out to see which one might have the right program for you. Which skating club do you coach at? I could just go to yours. Huh? Wait. Who, me? Yeah. I'm not a coach. You wouldn't want me anyway. Huh? It's already 6:00? Anyway, no more worms. You hear me? Yes, sir. - Hey, what grade are you in? - Huh? The fifth. So ten or 11? If you're serious about going pro, you're right at the cutoff age. I mean it. Talk to your mom first thing, okay? See ya. Hi, Mom. Welcome back. You were out for a long time. Yeah. I want to ask. Can you-- I can't help you with your homework right now. I'll review it after dinner, okay? Okay. Sorry, what should I be doing? Huh? You don't have to do anything. You wouldn't be very good at it anyway. It'll be fine. We can do the whole presentation ourselves. You can just sit and wait. Okay. Did your drawing turn out good? Yeah, it's good enough. I just want to go skate. I'll dig up a whole bunch of worms. Then I can skate as long as I want. What you're doing is wrong, and I think you know it. You're gonna have to cut that out. If you're serious about going pro, you're right at the cutoff age. An assistant coach? Yeah. The fact that you went to nationals for ice dancing, and the fact that you did that with me, if I recommend you for this, they're going to hire you on the spot. - I don't know. - What? You don't want to? I'm not qualified. The only reason I made it to nationals in the first place was because of you. Ice dancing is a two-person sport, Tsukasa. Yeah. But that was just a fluke. So what? You're going to work dead-end part-time jobs until you pass auditions? Look, you're 26 years old and you're not making much of a living right now. I'm not saying you should quit doing ice shows if that's what you want to do. Only, being an assistant coach is just as good a skating job. - Excuse me. - Huh? Are you Coach Takamine from Lux Higashiyama? I'm Yuitsuka. I called earlier asking to meet. Oh! Yes, hello! I've been expecting you. Come in. Oh, good. This won't take very long. Inori. What? Do you know this girl? Uh, yeah, kind of. Then why don't you sit and talk with us? I bet you'll pick up the coaching role before you even know it. Here, want a snack? I see you told her after all. Great job. Hmm? Take a look. I recommend this school for beginners. The lesson fees here are low if she's enrolled once a week. It would take a full two years for her to graduate though. Oh, I see you've done your research. Well, I know because my eldest daughter used to figure skate. Oh, is that so? Yes, I started her when she was only five. She had worked so hard. But she had an accident and had to quit. You see? I couldn't bear to put Inori through all that too. Besides, she's not doing very well in school. Her teachers have been worried about her grades for a long time already. To add skating on top of all that would just be too much. Then why are you-- She's been so insistent about it. So I'm taking her to different clubs. I figured if the coaches tell her "no", then maybe she'll finally drop it. Well, it's just a theory, but if she joins a club and starts private lessons-- What for? Her sister did this for years, so I know how the figure skating world is. There's no way she'll be able to catch up. Her peers will all have started at five or six and she'll be left behind. Inori, look out there. See how good they are. So small and already practicing jumps. Think of how miserable you'd be if you joined them. Wouldn't you be embarrassed? You know what? Let's just see what she can do. Uh, but... I'm not ready to believe she's hopeless. I'll decide that for myself. Hey there, Coach. A word, please. I'm sorry. I couldn't just sit there and listen to that any longer. Check out the big brain on you, smarty. You're going to butter up that kid and toss her right in the club, aren't ya? See? I know what I'm talking about. You're going to be a great assistant coach. No. My mouth just started moving before I had a chance to think about what I was saying. But be careful what you say to her! The eyes of the ice moms are ever watchful. If they think one of our coaches is playing favorites, I'm never gonna hear the end of it. I know how loud you can get, so I need a verbal confirmation that you get it. Yeah. I got it. Good. And I don't need to remind you how expensive figure skating can be for those who take it seriously. If she can't hack it, her family will suffer just as much as her. Just keep that in mind. I know. Doesn't look like we have a 21 back there, so are you okay with a 22? Uh-huh. That is not a happy face. I wish I could cheer her up, but I have to remember what Hitomi said. - I'm really sorry. - Huh? I should have told my mom a long time ago, because if I had, maybe I would actually have a chance. I wasted so much time. If I had only started earlier... Let's get these on. Mm-hmm. I talked to you like I knew better, but I couldn't tell my parents when I was young either. Huh? You're brave. Way more than you know. All right. Are you ready? I think so. Wait. What about her helmet? Oh! Hey! Wait a sec! She's fast. She's just gliding, but it looks like she's leaving a trail of stars behind her. Who is this girl? She's a completely different person on the ice! If you ask me, she's got it. - Huh? - Huh? And you're not forcing compliments just so she'll join the club, right? Of course not. Tsukasa! Choose your words wisely! Okay then. Let's test you on some of the basics. Forward swizzle. Know it? Yeah. Single forward. Backward swizzle. T-stop. See, she doesn't need skating school! Let's admit her to the club right now. Hey! Keep it down! I don't know that I've ever been more stunned. When did she get so good? Two-foot slalom. Forward crossover. I'm telling you! She's a natural! Would you stop yelling? Yeah. She's got no fear in her at all. I've already seen her do stuff that a normal beginner would be too scared to do. All self-taught. All right, what do you say we try a little skating? Skating? I thought that's what I was doing. You are, but I'll show you how a figure skater moves all fancy and graceful. Look here. You're going to be using both edges of the blade on the skates for different things. The inside edge and this is the outside edge. The first step to skating is to distinguish how they're used to propel you. First, place your feet at a 45-degree angle. Like this. Then, firmly bend your knees, stick your arms out. Now lean your ankle in towards your big toe, then you're on the inside edge. And then push off the ice with the entire blade. Now eventually, you'll be able to raise your free leg. That looks really cool. But that takes muscle, so don't push yourself at first. Wow. Long legs. Once you start moving, stretch the gliding leg all the way up and bring your free leg in to meet it. When you're steady on both legs, you can lean your gliding leg to the inside edge this time and push off again. Glide along until you're ready to bring that leg back in and repeat like so. - Now you give it a try. - Uh, do my leg like this... Um, I'm not moving at all. Am I doing this right? Yeah, if you lean forward like that, that's what puts on the brakes. Just try to keep your head up. Keep my head... Hey, kid! That looked painful. Are you okay? My mom was right. I guess I can't do this after all. This girl's moods are kind of extreme. This isn't something you can master on your first day. No one can. You have to find your center, keep practicing and refine it every time you skate. Before you know it, you'll be flying. Let's try again. Yeah! Bend your knees and push! Now try to straighten your leg out a little more. Okay. She's picking it up so fast. This is fun! Inori, you're doing amazing! What did you say? Did you just compliment me, Mom? I said you're doing amazing. You've really impressed me, Inori. And it's so good to see you smile again. - Does that mean that I can-- - Absolutely not. - What? - What? I've made up my mind. Salchow On the glimmering ice, even the world's greatest skaters struggle. No matter how many hours they spend perfecting their jumps, they can't land them every time. But if you can pull off moves that others never could— if you can grab everyone's attention with your grace— if you can show the beauty and freedom of your skating— then you're the true champion of figure skating. To get a chance on that beautiful icy stage, we little dreamers dove in headfirst, not realizing the price we'd have to pay. Pursuing our dreams... cost us everything. Oh, it's four o'clock already. No wonder there's so many kids around. Ow! You could at least apologize... She's probably around five. If I had started as young as her, who knows where I'd be now... You're 14? And a total beginner? Just forget it. I'm going home... I came all the way from Yokohama because I heard there was a skating job, but they said they're busy today and to come back tomorrow... Guess I'll stay at an internet café. Why's a kid coming out from behind the rental counter? Hey there! Sorry to bother you, but I'd like to ask you a couple questions. Did you come here alone today? Would you mind showing me your ticket? You did pay, right? Get back here! I'm busting my ass working part-time to scrape together enough to practice, and this little brat thinks she can skate for free? No way! Stop right there! Wait, hold up! She's— Huh? Seriously? Damn it! She can't have gotten very far. I must be hearing things. Wh-What are you climbing up there for?! Get down before— Please don't die... Hey, don't cry. I'm fin— So to get this straight, you're technically not skating for free because in exchange for worms for his birds, the receptionist guy is letting you into the rink? I-I... I'm not lying! I-It's true, I swear! Look, I've got them here! A-Alright, I get it! Just put them away, please! Really, old man? Using that as an excuse to let her in? But I'm more surprised by the fact that they managed to get away with it. Hey, um... you're trembling. Are you okay? I hate snakes and things like 'em, so please keep those abominations away from me. Okay... Anyhow... You running away means you knew you were doing something wrong, right? You have to stop doing that. If others started doing the same thing, the rink would go bankrupt. Okay... She's surprisingly cooperative... That book... What a blast from the past! It's such a great guidebook! I used to read this all the time. These notes... I always dreamed of being a figure skater. But my mom says I can't because I'll get hurt. So I started practicing on my own, hoping that one day... Have you told your mom that? Huh? Have you told her that skating's your dream? Here's a list of figure skating clubs in Nagoya and their contact details. Go over it with your mom and have her reach out to ones that seem like a good fit. Would you mind telling me which club you coach at? Who, me? Hmm? I'm not really a coach or anything like that... It's already six?! No more worm business, alright? Y-Yes! What grade are you in? F-Fifth. So you're about 11 years old. If you're serious about going pro, this is your last chance to start. Huh? Talk to your mom as soon as you get home, okay? See ya. I'm home. Welcome back. You're late today. Yeah... Hey, Mom, I— You've got homework to do, don't you? You should get it done before you forget. O-Okay. S-Sorry, but, um, what should I be doing? Huh? You don't have to do anything. You wouldn't be able to help anyway. It's fine. We'll take care of everything. Just wait until we're done, Inori. Okay... You guys happy with your drawings? I think mine's looking pretty good! I really... want to skate... If I just give Mr. Sekoma more worms, I can go to the rink and... You knew you were doing something wrong, right? You have to stop doing that. If you're serious about going pro, this is your last chance to start. An assistant coach? That's right. You went to the ice dancing nationals with me, so you have a really solid track record. If I recommend you to the club, I'm sure they'd hire you on the spot. I'm not really sure... Huh? You don't want to? The thing is... Everyone thinks it was your skill that got us to nationals. Ice dancing is a two-person sport, isn't it? But... I don't feel like I contributed anything. So is the plan just to keep working part-time until you pass an audition? Tsukasa, you're 26 now, right? And you still don't have a steady income? I'm not saying you should give up on ice shows, but being an assistant coach is a respectable skating career, too. Excuse me. Are you Coach Takamine from Lux Higashiyama? I'm Ms. Yuitsuka. I called you earlier. Oh, hello! I've been expecting you! Sorry to bother you while you're busy. Inori. Wait, do you know her? Uh, yeah, kind of. Why don't you sit in with us then? It'll help you get a feel for what coaching is like. Here, have a snack. You finally told your mom, didn't you? For beginners, we usually recommend this school first. And if it's just once a week, the fees are quite affordable. But wouldn't it take her two years to graduate? Oh, you're quite knowledgeable! Yes. My eldest used to figure skate. Is that so? Yes. She started when she was five. A lot happened, and ultimately, it just brought her pain. That's why I'm determined not to let Inori face the same fate. Not to mention, her grades at school aren't great. Even the teachers are concerned. Balancing skating with her studies would be too much. Then, why did you come? She's been very insistent about it. I figured if I took her around to a few clubs and had the coaches tell her "no" directly, she might finally give up. Th-This is just a theory, but if she joins a club and starts private lessons— It's pointless. Since her sister used to figure skate, I think I have a pretty good idea of what the figure skating world is like. There's no way she can catch up to the kids who started when they were five, right? Inori, look out there. See how amazing they all are? Even the little kids are already landing jumps. If you were to join them this late, you'd just end up feeling miserable. Let's not jump to conclusions without seeing her skate first. B-But... I'll be the one to judge if it's really pointless for her to start now. Tsukasa, a word. I-I'm sorry. I couldn't just sit there and listen to— Nice idea punch! You're planning to praise her so she'll join our club, aren't you? Good thinking! Looks like you really are suited to be an assistant coach. Huh? No, my mouth just started moving on its own and— But! Be careful how you compliment her! The eyes of the ice moms are ever watchful. If it looks like you're playing favorites, we could be in a serious pickle. I know you can get quite loud, so be mindful of that! O-Okay. And don't forget—figure skating gets really expensive if you get serious about it. If she quits halfway, her parents' efforts will also be for nothing. Keep that in mind. Right... Are you sure you're okay with a size 22 instead of a 21? Uh-huh. That's not a happy face... I wish I could do something to cheer her up, but Hitomi made a really good point earlier. I'm really sorry. If I'd just told my mom earlier, I could've avoided all the cheating to get in, and maybe I would actually have a chance. If only I'd started earlier... Here, put your feet in. O-Okay. I might've sounded confident earlier, but I also couldn't bring myself to tell my parents. Huh? You're brave. Way more than you realize. Are you ready? Yep! Wait! What about her helmet? Wait a—! She's fast! She's just gliding on the ice, but it looks like she's leaving a trail of stars behind her. Who is this girl? She's a completely different person on the ice! She's... got what it takes. Are you just buttering us up so she'll join the club? Of course not! Tsukasa, choose your words wisely! Alright, let's try some of the basics. Do you know how to do swizzles? Yes! Forward swizzle. Backward swizzle. T-stop. She doesn't need skating school! Let's admit her to the club right away! H-Hey! Keep it down! I just can't believe what I'm seeing. When did she learn all that? Two-foot slalom. Forward crossover. She's a natural! A prodigy! I told you to keep it down! I get it now. She's not scared of falling. She practiced by herself, falling over and over, and naturally overcame that fear. Alright, how about we try a little skating? Skating? Isn't that what we've been doing? Not quite. I'm talking about gliding gracefully, like a true figure skater. Look here. Skating is all about using the two edges of the skate blade. We have the inside edge and the outside edge. The first step in skating is learning how to use these two edges. Start by positioning your feet at about a 45-degree angle. Firmly bend your knees, and bring your arms to shoulder height. Tilt your ankle inward toward your big toe to engage the inside edge, and then push off the ice with the entire blade. At this point, it looks really cool if you raise your free leg—the one not on the ice. But don't push yourself at first. His legs are so long... As you start moving, straighten your supporting leg, and bring your free leg in. When your free leg gets to the inside, tilt the supporting leg to the inside and push with it. Then bring it back under you and push off with the other leg. Just keep repeating that. So... I move my feet like this... H-Huh? I'm barely moving forward at all... Leaning forward will cause you to brake. You need to keep your head up. Keep my head... H-Hey! Are you okay? I guess I'm completely useless after all... This girl's moods are kind of extreme. Skating isn't something you can master in a day or two. You need to spend countless hours practicing, and in the process, find the center of gravity that makes everything fall into place. Let's give it another shot. Okay! Put my feet like this... and push! Can you point your feet out a little more? Y-Yes! She's picking it up really quickly. This is fun! Inori, you're doing amazing! Mom, did you just praise me?! You're incredible, Inori. I had no idea you could do all that. I'm so proud of you. Does that mean I c— Absolutely not. What?! I have no intention of letting her figure skate. But... Watching my eldest, I realized something. She had to give up her childhood at the age of five to focus solely on skating. Only to abandon it, never seeing the results she wanted. Seeing her go through that was truly heartbreaking. Inori just hasn't found a dream outside of skating yet. I don't want her to pour time and money into something that I know won't pay off. Is that so wrong of me to think as her parent? She's not wrong. Starting figure skating at 11 would be incredibly hard. As someone who started way later than everyone else, I should know. I... I hate the way things are right now. Inori? I-I-I-I've always dreamed of being a figure skater. I-I know skating is hard— so hard that even my s-sister gave up. And I know that I'm constantly causing trouble for you, Mom. I-I always feel like I have to apologize. I keep telling myself I shouldn't bother you... That I shouldn't be selfish... But... skating is something I've always wanted to do! It's the only thing that makes me happy! Just remembering that I can skate helped me ignore all the bad things at school. It made me feel like I had something that was setting me apart from other kids! But that was just me lying to myself... I'm... not good at anything! I want to have something I can be proud of. Something I'll love more than anyone else! Something I'll be really, really good at. I want to feel like I'm not worthless! Ms. Yuitsuka. Just let her join the club, damn it. "Damn it"? What are you saying?! Of course, there's no guarantee she'll become an Olympic athlete. However! She has the one thing that is absolutely essential for skating. A burning passion for the rink! Skating demands a lot of time and money— far more than most other activities. And to succeed, the skater must have fierce determination and an iron will. But the other kids all started at five— Oh, give me a break! Kids that age can't seriously practice a damn thing! Tsukasa. Keep it down. Am I a total idiot? Why did I hesitate? If anyone understands how kids like Inori feel, it's me! It never mattered how old or insecure I was. I wasn't going to give up! Back then... What was it that I needed?! What was I wishing for?! I'll do it! I'll be her coach! I'll teach her how to skate! Your daughter's come this far just from teaching herself! She can still catch up! She's got real talent, and I know she'll only get better. She's not afraid of falling, her core strength is solid, she follows instructions, and she's got the hunger for more! As long as you can just bring her to practice, I'm confident she'll unlock her full potential! No, I'm more than confident. I will turn her into a skater who can compete at the Japan Nationals! Please let me coach her! Well... If you're this sure about it... I'll leave her in your hands, Coach... Let's go! Isn't this great? Oh, um, what's your name again? Inori. I'm Yuitsuka Inori! That's a beautiful name. Stand up! Bow! Bye bye! Is it me, or has Inori been acting differently? She's been really cheerful lately. She must have something fun going on. Do you have any idea what you put me through?! The other parents have been breathing down my neck nonstop! Please keep that favoritism to yourself from now on! Understood. Can you wipe that "I didn't do anything wrong" look from your face before I wipe it for you? Coach Tsukasa! Hey! Now that's the smile of a gold medalist! What did we literally just talk about?!
